THAt 13 years old, Li Yongqiu became the junior division champion at Juste Debout 2026, one of the most prestigious street dance competitions in the world. The win was built on months of unconventional preparation that set Li apart from every other competitor on the floor.
In the two months leading up to the event, Li's coaching team partnered with a Shaolin martial arts master to study traditional Mantis Fist techniques. The goal was to understand the style's explosive bursts of energy and its deceptive fluidity, then translate those qualities into breaking choreography. It was a process that demanded as much discipline from a martial artist as from a dancer.
Coach Lai put the philosophy into words with the phrase "tracing the roots." Breaking in the 1980s was already influenced by kung fu movies, but what Li and the team pursued was something more direct: authentic Chinese cultural heritage brought to the world stage through sport. The performance that followed made the argument better than any words could.
