There are lots of breast cancer risk factors. There’s genetics, age, hormones. Things we can’t control.
But these are the modifiable lifestyle factors that research shows are linked to higher breast cancer risk in Australia.
Here’s what the data shows:
1. Overweight and obesity after menopause
Around 8% of postmenopausal breast cancer cases each year are linked to being overweight or obese.
For every 5-point increase in BMI after menopause, breast cancer risk increases by about 12%.
What you can do today: Regular meals. Less grazing. More protein and fibre.
Even preventing gradual weight gain over the years makes a difference.
2. Low physical activity after menopause
Nearly 8% of postmenopausal breast cancers are linked to not moving enough. It often looks like sitting most of the day or fewer than 150 minutes of moderate movement a week. Women with higher levels of physical activity have about a 13% lower risk compared to those who are least active.
What you can do today: 10-20 minute walk. 2 short strength sessions a week at home.
3. Alcohol consumption
Around 6% of all breast cancer cases in Australia are attributed to alcohol.
Even one standard drink a day is associated with about a 7% higher risk compared to not drinking.
What you can do today: Alcohol-free weekdays. Smaller pours. Choosing alcohol-free options more often.
None of this means breast cancer is preventable if you just try hard enough (that narrative helps no one.)
But it does mean that small, realistic changes can shift risk over time.
