GRBridget Riley taking in the early 60s about where she begins with her Op Art paintings. Riley (who I think is still working now in her 90s), uses clean lines, colour, and geometric precision to create optical disorientating work that is often hard to look at (I get queasy sometimes). I suppose it makes sense that she is an admirer of the Pointillist Georges Seurat and she once said: “The eye can travel over the surface in a way parallel to the way it moves over nature. MUBridget Riley, one of the most influential figures in 20th-century art, played a pivotal role in the development and popularization of Op Art, or Optical Art. Born in 1931 in London, Riley’s journey into the world of visual perception began in earnest during the late 1950s and early 1960s. She studied at Goldsmiths College and the Royal College of Art, where she was initially influenced by the Impressionists and later the Pointillists, particularly Georges Seurat. It was Seurat’s method of applying colour in tiny dots that sparked her fascination with visual effects, eventually leading her to explore the dynamic interaction between form, colour, and perception.
Riley’s breakthrough into Op Art came in the early 1960s when she began to experiment with black-and-white geometric patterns. These works, made up of precise lines, curves, and shapes, created optical illusions that seemed to move, vibrate, or swell. Her 1961 painting Movement in Squares is one of the earliest examples of her distinctive style. In it, she used a simple arrangement of black and white squares, gradually shifting in size and spacing, to create the illusion of movement within the still canvas. This exploration of visual phenomena was not only a technical challenge but also an aesthetic one—Riley aimed to activate the viewer's eye, making the act of looking a physical, almost kinetic experience.
Her involvement with Op Art was further solidified when she was included in the 1965 exhibition The Responsive Eye at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This show brought international attention to a new generation of artists exploring perceptual art, and Riley emerged as one of its stars. Although she disliked the label “Op Art,” which she felt commercialised and oversimplified her work, there’s no denying her foundational influence on the movement. Riley wasn’t simply trying to trick the eye; she was deeply interested in how visual perception works and how subtle manipulations of line and colour could trigger intense sensory responses.
