I wouldn't wear that colour if I were you, You're too dark". Its Eid circa 2010 and these words have been muttered to me on Eid day. They sting. "You're too dark". It hurts further. I wont elaborate to say who said these words, but I internalised the message so much that for years I ashamedly refused to wear a white, cream, yellow o any light colour hijab just in case i looked 'dark' . South Asian obsession with being fair runs deep. Its ingrained into every facet of our society, mentioned at almost every gathering and 'white' is upheld as the minimum standard for beauty. Men and women are persistently denigrated for being 'dark' whether its in Lollywood/Bollywood or your local aunty jis house. Dark is synonymous with ugly, unwanted and almost unloved. Now that I have a daughter I am remined of this so much more . Since her birth, well meaning aunties and uncles have commented on her skin colour. I've had these comments with my boys too but less so because, well, they have Y chromosomes and that is enough in many south asian communities to be loved.  "Oh she looks so cute in that colour, "bilqul chithee", meaning absolutely white. Comments have been passed on her 'rosy' cheeks and how 'lucky' she is. . She's lucky you see, because being a girl AND on the 'fairer' side means she is considered 'beautiful' in many peoples eyes. That she will somehow find it easier to live life, have friends and get married. I wont go into how British colonialism and racism play as significant role in the asian obsession with fair skin but suffice to say that the message and mindset being perpetuated is one of "white is might" . But I am not the the Kiran of 2009, I am comfortable in my own skin and I wear my smile with pride. I have a voice and I will use it ferociously within my family and  to anyone who upholds this horrednous skin colour bias that has spawned the globe. So here I am, celebrating myself in all the colours of the world and rocking it, even if I say so myself
