AGToday we took 50 of our students to the 3rd Annual Allied Construction & Trades Symposium at St. Philip’s College, where more than 400 students from across the Greater San Antonio area came together to learn about careers in the skilled trades.
South Texas Associated Builders and Contractors President Michelle Davis kicked off the event by sharing the reality facing the industry: nearly 498,000 open skilled trades positions nationwide, with almost 200,000 of those right here in Texas. She challenged students to see themselves as the generation stepping in to replace the large number of tradesmen retiring over the next five years.
Students then rotated through breakout sessions with a dozen industry companies and several training programs at St. Philip’s. They wrapped up the day hearing from a panel of industry professionals who spoke honestly about the challenges and rewards of working in the trades.
Opportunities like this give students real exposure to careers, companies, and the people behind the industry. Even more importantly, it gives them a chance to start building relationships with the employers who may one day hire them.
