It was delightful to meet Anuj (@anujsharmanid) at one of his recent workshops at 47A (@47a.design) kotachiwadi! We love him for democratising fashion and birthing a technique unique to India @buttonmasala, which finds its roots in ‘draping’. Just how “saree” is quintessentially a piece of fabric draped around the body, the button masala technique uses fabrics to create modern silhouettes - tops, bottoms, dresses etc., purely with a draping technique. No cutting, no sewing. In Anuj’s words, this is the most natural extension of saree and what it should’ve evolved into for the modern Indian woman; in context of Indian fashion. Most admirable part about this brand is, Anuj doesn’t believe in gatekeeping this technique, and democratically loves to teach and educate anyone who is remotely interested in how they can transform a 3m fabric into a lovely piece of couture! India in last 50 years quietly moved from cotton sarees to polyester sarees. And after their life is over the sarees are thrown away. Ahmedabad has a small market where you can buy these old sarees. We picked about 10 sarees and made some flowers out of them. Added a new life to almost dead sarees, that would have been thrown in landfills because there is no other alternative. We have decided to bring these sarees to the walls of the world. Our first button masala polyester sarees project which we recently sampled is here.
