How do senior engineers handle this situation? 🧠 First Reality: The moment the key became public… 👉 Assume it was already stolen. Bots continuously scan public GitHub repos for leaked AWS credentials within minutes. So this is now a security incident, not just a Git mistake. ⚡ First Step: Revoke the Key Immediately Before touching Git history or deleting commits: 👉 Disable the leaked IAM access key. aws iam update-access-key —status Inactive 💥 Why this matters: Even if attackers already copied the key… Once it’s inactive: 👉 Every API request signed with it fails instantly. This is the fastest way to reduce risk. 🔍 Next: Investigate What Happened Check: • AWS CloudTrail logs • Access history • API calls made using that key Look for: • Unknown IPs • Strange AWS regions • Unexpected EC2 creation • IAM user creation • Suspicious S3 activity If anything looks suspicious → treat it like a real breach. 🧹 Then Clean Git History Now remove the secret from the repository history. Use: git filter-repo Then force push the cleaned history. ⚠️ Important: Rewriting Git history affects everyone: • Commit SHAs change • Open PRs may break • Teammates need to re-sync local repos So communicate before force-pushing. 🌐 Hidden Problem Most People Forget Even after deleting commits… GitHub may still cache old commit pages temporarily. Meaning leaked secrets might still be accessible through old URLs.
