🌕🛬 Nova-D Just Got A Moon South Pole Job NASA just picked Intuitive Machines to send a larger cargo-class lander toward the Moon's south pole with seven payloads riding aboard. The $180.4 million CLPS delivery targets 2030 and carries instruments built to read lunar soil chemistry, ice clues, radiation, and landing-plume damage. That matters because Artemis will need bigger hardware landing near other assets, where engine exhaust can sandblast dust into cameras, sensors, and nearby machines. SCALPSS is flying again to measure how the exhaust plume digs into the surface as the lander descends. This is the same measurement problem that gets harder as landers grow and touchdown sites move closer together. NIRVSS will look for minerals and possible ices by reading reflected light from the soil at fine scales. MSolo will sample volatile gases after touchdown, while radiation detectors and a lunar laser reflector help turn one landing into a longer surface data point. The odd detail is the mass: the rovers and instruments together add up to only 165 pounds, compared with the heavier Artemis-era landers this contract is quietly preparing for. A south pole cargo flight like this is not just delivery logistics, it is rehearsal for how the Moon reacts when exploration finally gets crowded. Shortly after landing on the Moon on March 2, Firefly Aerospace and NASA teams kicked off surface operations for the instruments on the company’s Blue Ghost lunar lander. That included deploying the Lunar PlanetVac (LPV), which was developed to efficiently collect and transfer lunar soil from the Moon to other science instruments or sample return containers without relying on gravity. The innovative approach to sample collection and in situ testing could prove to be a game-changer, said Dennis Harris, who manages the LPV payload for the CLPS initiative at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. In this video, the lunar “vacuum cleaner” can be seen spreading lunar soil and rocks flying across the lunar surface as a burst of air from the pneumatic, compressed gas-powered sample acquisition and delivery system initiates. The mission is part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program to understand more about the Moon’s surface ahead of the coming Artemis missions. The Odysseus lander is expected to land near the south pole of the moon on February 22, which would make it the first US spacecraft to land on the moon in over 50 years and the first commercial spacecraft to successfully land on the lunar surface.

La Blue Ghost se convirtió el pasado 2 de marzo en la primera nave de EE UU en realizar un alunizaje perfecto desde que la Apolo 17 lo logró en 1972. Más de medio siglo después de aquella última experiencia humana en la Luna, la sonda robótica de la empresa Firefly Aerospace ha podido terminar su trabajo, antes de apagarse para siempre con la llegada de la gélida noche lunar, el pasado domingo día 16. La Blue Ghost se ha despedido con un vídeo en alta definición del Sol ocultándose bajo el horizonte de la superficie de la Luna, algo que ningún astronauta ha podido presenciar allí con sus propios ojos. En el satélite natural de la Tierra, tanto el día como la noche duran lo mismo que 14 jornadas terrestres. Y al llegar la oscuridad la temperatura baja bruscamente a casi –175ºC.
