Question: How to select optionals for CSS?
Consider 4 things while choosing an optional subject.
1) Your interest in the subject:
The subject was one of your graduation subjects, you have a general curiosity or inclination towards the subject. If you choose a subject based on your interest, you are more likely to add more effort to that subject.
2) Scoring trend and predictability
Languages generally are high-scoring subjects. Subjects which are over-staurated (alot of people choosing the same subject) are more likely to be targeted in terms of scoring.
eg: highest score in criminology in CSS'2023 was 60.
3) Syllabus of the subject and time required:
Before choosing any optional, go through the fpsc recommended syllabus for that subject and have an estimate of the time required to cover the syllabus at hand.
eg: If you are choosing histories (US, European, British, Indo-Pak) as optionals, they are going to require more of your time because of extensive syallabus.
4) Subject overlap with other subjects:
This point is often ignored while choosing optionals. Do consider your subject's syllabus/concepts overlap with other optionals and compulsory subjects.
eg: Governance and Public Policies has considerable overlap with Pakistan affairs, Current affairs and Political science.

ACExactly one year ago, on January 22, 2024, I had my CSS interview – a day I’ll never forget.
I was unwell, running a fever, and the cold weather wasn’t making it any easier. Yet, I managed to push through. At 6:00 AM, I was reading the newspaper of the day, and my amazing friend made breakfast for me. She was my biggest support throughout, always cheering me on.
My reporting time was 10:30 AM as my interview was scheduled for the second half. I was super nervous, but my friend, who lovingly called me Manoj because PSP was our dream group, stayed by my side to give me moral support.
Finally, at 12:35 PM, I entered the interview room, and the session ended at 1:15 PM. It was an intense and unforgettable experience. The video she recorded right after I stepped out of the interview room captured my raw emotions at that moment.
What a day it was – one of the most significant milestones of my life. I’m forever grateful to my friends @ikre_esger @u.bukhari123 for being there, for recording these memories, and for all their prayers and support on such an important day. ❤️

FAHow I Passed CSS:
1- Fitting Study Plan: I followed a strict schedule since the beginning- 4.5 months for compulsory subjects, 3 months for optional ones, and 1 month for revision and writing practice.
2- Strategic Choice of Optional Subjects: I chose subjects based on syllabus, past papers, and my own strengths. I'm better at analyzing things and writing answers on the spot, not at memorizing the stuff for a longer time, so I opted accordingly.
3- Smart Study: I grouped overlapping topics across subjects, studied past papers deeply, and kept everything organized in separate registers. I didn’t waste time reading irrelevant material.
4- Fetched the Maximum from the Academy I joined for 2.5 months: I joined an academy to prepare for my compulsory subjects only. In that time period, I took almost all the weekly tests, attended all the lectures, studied and gathered a fine stock of notes, observed mock papers of senior aspirants, and got a lot of my writings (answers, précis, essay outlines) evaluated.
5- Past Papers + Written Practice = My Best Friends: I practiced answer writing consistently and prioritized past paper patterns.
6- Medium-Sized Notes: Not too long, not too short. Made structured notes with headers, subheaders, and added relevant stats for quick revision.
7- Used ChatGPT Wisely : I used AI considerably, especially in preparing my optional subjects as I didn't have mentors to discuss my ambiguities with.
8- Consistency was the Key : Stayed loyal to my study plan; skipped outings, reunions, weddings, and even sleep and skincare. Hehe
9- Studied Till the Very End: No pre-exam relaxation. I kept revising, stayed alert, and avoided mental lethargy.
10- Last-Minute Writing Drills: Practiced solving 2 past papers daily right before the exams; no gap between practice and real battle.
Note: I started serious prep in Jan 2023, but have stayed in touch with CSS-related content since late 2019.
Remember: It’s not just about hard work, it’s about the right work, done consistently. 🎯
