When the longest government shutdown in U.S. history cut off CalFresh benefits for thousands of neighbors across San Francisco and Marin, the community stepped up. Together with 24 partners and 7,000 volunteers, the Food Bank’s Shutdown Community Response helped distribute 1.1 million extra pounds of food — the equivalent of 800,000 meals. One of the partners that stepped up to expand emergency distributions was @nmcs_1972 in Novato, where volunteers loaded trunks with fresh produce and neighbors donated pallets of food to make sure no one went without.
