The Supreme Court just issued their decision in the Callais case and, as we feared, they have ended the voting rights act as we know it. It’s a devastating day – – especially if you are a Black or Brown American. But y’all, they want us to give up. They want us to feel like it’s all too much. So let’s grieve today, then fight tomorrow. You’ll find some excellent organizations to support and follow in this document. https://tinyurl.com/4xpf94mk (I’ll add more as I find them.)

The recent Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais that effectively killed the last remaining provision of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was authored by Justice Samuel Alito. But it represents the life's work of Chief Justice John Roberts. The Roberts Court has now gutted the Voting Rights Act on three different occasions, and Roberts wrote or joined every one of those opinions. And that's not an accident. Roberts has been trying to kill the Voting Rights Act for more than 40 years, and it looks like he's finally succeeded. Watch our new video to understand how Roberts has steadily worked to destroy the VRA and what can be done to fight back:

This is what the impact of the Callais decision looks like. Yesterday Tennessee voted to eliminate the only majority Black district, bringing the total to three states that have eliminated similar districts including Florida and Alabama. More states like South Carolina and Louisiana are due to vote on the same. #votingrights #callais #nojimcrowmaps

The 1965 Voting Rights Act wasn’t just a piece of paper; it was a shield. After this week’s Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, that shield just got a lot thinner. We’re watching the dismantling of Section 2 in real-time. If you think this is just about “maps, and race” you’re missing the bigger picture. . . . #news

The Supreme Court did what this irreparably broken Supreme Court does. But they did it in a way that is so catastrophically stupid it needs to be called out, to expose the power grab behind it, and the steps required to shut it down. The Supreme Court’s April 2026 ruling in Louisiana v. Callais is seen by critics as dismantling key protections of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, with many warning it takes the country back toward “Jim Crow” era voting conditions. The 6-3 decision makes it harder to challenge maps that dilute minority voting power. The conservative majority’s decision effectively limits Section 2 of the VRA—a key tool against racial discrimination in voting—to cases of intentional discrimination, which is a very high legal standard. Civil rights groups warn this ruling greenlights racial gerrymandering, allowing states to dilute Black and minority voting power. Critics argue the decision reverses decades of progress, moving back to a pre-1965 environment regarding minority representation. The ruling emphasizes that voting is an individual right rather than a group right, a move celebrated by conservative advocates. The Voting Rights Act was never discriminatory. It was a response to discrimination. And six justices just gutted it. 6-3 ruling, Louisiana v. Callais, last Wednesday. The Court ruled that drawing voting maps to fix racial discrimination is itself unconstitutional. Justice Kagan in her dissent called the ruling a “dead letter” for the law that ended Jim Crow. John Lewis had his skull cracked on a bridge in Selma so I could vote. My family grew up under the law that came out of it. And in my lifetime in one ruling, in one week six people decided that protection was unfair to everybody else. The argument they used is the exact same one used against reparations: “that was a long time ago, fixing it now would be unfair.” Same trick. Different decade. The harm is documented and the fix is what they’re calling racist. You can’t call the cure the disease. That’s how a country never heals. Follow along, I’m going to keep doing the reading nobody else is doing for you.

There is nothing in the Supreme Court’s Callais opinion that requires this legislature to eliminate majority-Black seats or eliminate majority-Democratic seats. To do so would be a shameful repeat of what happened during post-Reconstruction, all for the sake of pleasing a President who cares about no one. #VRA #VotingRights #LaLege
