Here’s what’s really happening 👇 When you hold ice, your brain receives a sudden, intense sensory signal. If the body panics, the breath becomes shallow, jaw tightens, shoulders lift — and the nervous system shifts into fight or flight. That same stress response during labor increases muscle tension around the pelvis, making contractions feel heavier and more exhausting. But when you slow your breath, soften your jaw, relax your shoulders, something powerful happens. Your brain receives a new message: “I am safe.” This activates the parasympathetic nervous system — the same system that supports cervical opening, uterine efficiency, and pain modulation during labor. In labor, pain doesn’t need to be “fought.” It needs to be breathed through. Nutrition is super important in the postnatal period, and unfortunately an area that is a bit neglected! ⁠My top tip - focus on nutrient dense snacks and ideally stock up your freezer in pregnancy! ⁠ You need approximately 500 calories extra calories per day when you’re breastfeeding. That is quite a lot! Most women will find that they are hungrier when breastfeeding, which makes sense. Aim to have a balance of protein, carbohydrate and fat at each meal. Meat, vegetables, fruit, whole-grains like brown rice and oats are a great start. Making sure you’re getting in enough fibre is also important. Unfortunately constipation is quite common in the postnatal period and upping the fibre and water intake is one of the first things we try. I heard a group of mums at school pickup recently sharing their birth stories. It started because one of the teachers had welcomed her baby over the summer holidays. Everyone was excited for her. They asked how she was. How the birth went. And then, almost without realising, the conversation widened. These women began sharing their own stories. Their babies were no longer babies. They were nearly 8 years old. And yet, the emotion was still right there. Some spoke with smiles on their faces — proud, grounded, strong. Others found it harder to revisit. Because birth is not just one day. It’s a day that stays with you. It becomes part of how you see yourself. Part of how you remember the moment you became a mother. Part of the story you carry forward. Birth is not a medical event to endure. It is a transformation. And that transformation is not about having a perfect birth. It’s about how you feel within it. Prepared. Informed. Supported. Empowered. That’s where the transformation truly lies. Not in controlling every outcome — but in trusting yourself within the experience. This is why birth preparation matters so much. Every week, I see women shift from fear to confidence. I see partners step into their role feeling calm and capable. I see couples walk away knowing they can navigate whatever unfolds. And one day, years from now, you will be standing at the school gate, watching your child run off with their friends.
