IZThings I wish I knew before coming to Canada as an international student:
Here’s the real version no one tells you.
1. Your health is more important than any job. If you get sick, everything else — work, studies, income gets affected.
2. You won’t always find a part-time job immediately. Sometimes it takes months , and that is normal.
3. Winters affect your mental health more than you expect. The darkness, isolation, and cold are heavier than people admit.
4. You will feel temporary for a long time. Even if you live here for months, it can still feel like you’re in-between worlds.
5. Homesickness is real. When your parents or family visit, it feels like you suddenly have a home again.
6. Some days, no one will be there to support you. You have to lift yourself up and keep going.
7. Life here is not instantly stable. Many people live paycheck to paycheck, and missing even a few days of work can create stress about rent and bills.
8. Housing may not look like Instagram. Basement rooms, shared spaces, and small setups are very common at the start.
9. Groceries and everyday expenses are higher than you expect. Budgeting is necessary, not optional.
10. Making real friends takes time. Almost everyone feels lonely in the first few months.
11. You will question your decision at least once. But over time, you grow stronger, independent, and more confident than you imagined.
