Outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ripped into US President Donald Trump for imposing tariffs on Canadian goods, warning it is a “very dumb thing to do”. “Today the US launched a trade war against Canada, their closest partner and ally and friend,” Trudeau said. “At the same time, they’re talking about working positively with Russia, and appeasing Vladimir Putin - a lying murderous dictator. Make that make sense.” Speaking directly to Trump, Trudeau said that while he is a “very smart guy”, his trade war is a “very dumb thing to do”. “We two friends fighting is exactly what our opponents around the world want to see.” After the US announced 25% taxes on Canadian and Mexican goods and a 10% levy on Canadian energy exports, Trudeau announced retaliatory tariffs on US exports. He said the first tranche of taxes applies to C$30bn worth of goods and will kick in immediately, while the remaining C$125bn would be introduced within 21 days. He told US workers who would be impacted by these tariffs that their own government had chosen to place American jobs at risk. “They have chosen to raise costs for US consumers on items like groceries and gas, cars, homes, and everything in between. They’ve chosen to harm US national security, impeding access to the critical minerals, building materials and fertilisers that we have and that the US needs to grow and prosper.” “They’ve chosen to sabotage their own agenda that was supposed to usher in a new golden age for the US and to undermine the incredible work we’ve done together to tackle the scourge of fentanyl.” He also dismissed Trump’s claims that Canada has failed to stop fentanyl smuggling across the US border, arguing that less than 1% of illegal fentanyl crossings come from Canada and that the nation recently implemented a C$1.3bn investment plan to stem the flows He told the people of Canada that while the trade war will be tough, the government will do everything in its power to defend Canadian jobs.
