SUThey called it Kala Pani…
not just because of the dark waters,
but because once you entered, there was no way back.
The Cellular Jail was built to break people… not just physically, but mentally.
Freedom fighters were sent here, miles away from home,
cut off from family, from voices, from hope.
Each prisoner lived in a small cell, completely alone.
No conversations. No human touch. Just silence that slowly consumed you.
Days were filled with forced labour, brutal punishments, and unimaginable pain…
nights with nothing but their own thoughts.
It wasn’t just a prison.
It was isolation at its harshest.
And yet… they endured.
Today, it stands quietly.
Not as a place of fear anymore,
but as a reminder of courage, sacrifice, and everything it took for us to be free. 🇮🇳
Some places you don’t just visit…
you feel them.
We walked through it … and didn’t feel the same after.

ARFREEDOM doesn’t come for free!
Cellular Jail (aka Kaalapaani) in Port Blair reminds us even today of all the atrocities that were being done by the Britishers on our freedom fighters. The confined cells, the living conditions in which they lived, just so that we can see the day of freedom one day, is beyond imagination!
Highly recommend to visit this place to pay respect to the freedom fighters!

VIEach visit to this place churns my stomach--the nightmarish Kala Pani / Cellular jail prison in the Andamans. It stands as a mute spectator of decades of unbridled gruesome torture that thousands of Indian freedom fighters endured …no good food, potable water, basic facilities of toilets, defecating and urinating within your narrow 7x11 cells, hangings, electrocution, grinding oil all day in the blazing sun, no medical facilities, no pen/paper, human isolation & standing handcuffs punishment for weeks— the list is endless. That so many young men went mad or committed suicide is testimony to the fact that it was unbearable torture. Along with Savarkar, his brother Babarao, Barin Ghose, Ulaskar Dutt, Indubhushan Roy, Sachindranath Sanyal, the brave #Ghadarites, countless young men in their late teens and early 20s, from every part of India (more from Bengal and Punjab) sacrificed and suffered so much, just so that you and I are able to live freely in independent India.
That we may not even know 10-15 names or of their plight and sufferings, or that we go there today like tourists holidaying in a fun picnic spot, laughing, cackling, selfie-ing and playing the fool there is an altogether different testament of our utter ingratitude and complete lack of historical consciousness. A place like this should be a pilgrimage spot for sombre national reflection - not just for common citizens like us but our leaders, politicians, businessmen and media professionals, so that we are reminded of the need for national re-dedication, if we've started.
If heard intently, those wails, those screams of horror, the silent sobs and their sad stories whisper through the barracks and jolt you violently from within…. And involuntarily catalyse you to strain hard for your country and its progress.
Alas, If only, we knew, if only we tried!
