DX@Erewhon didn’t want you to know!
We crashed the upscale grocer’s Pasadena wellness event on Sunday with a satirical skit calling out the company’s broken promises over ethical sourcing and animal welfare.
We performed a “wellness check” (“necropsy”) on a toy goat while wearing hazmat suits. How did it look? Not so well.
Erewhon employees interrupted our skit and tried to block the cameras — they even called the cops and escorted us out for exercising our First Amendment rights. (See related stories in @pasadenanow and @lamag!)
The company sources several of its products, including Meyenberg Goat Milk, from factory farms — and there’s nothing ethical about that!
DxE investigations found an illegal pile of dead goats at Vera Goat Dairy — Meyenberg’s supplier — in Stratford, CA.
Activists brought two deceased goats from the factory farm to a UC Davis lab for necropsy testing and found evidence of coccidia parasites, bacterial bronchopneumonia consistent with E. coli infection, and severe emaciation.
The lab also found the animals had no measurable fat reserves and significant muscle atrophy.
We argue that this systemic neglect violates California Penal Code 597 and, as we already wrote to the company, is in direct conflict with Erewhon’s values.
