This remarkable Charles II porringer is an exceptionally rare treasure of the 17th century. While many porringers from this period often have covers, very few are three-piece sets such as this one, complete with an elaborate stand. This period, circa 1670, was marked by the restoration of the monarchy and Charles II’s extravagant tastes, and this exquisite porringer epitomizes the lavishness of the era. Last Part - Charles II - This video is not meant to mock Charles II. He was a victim of centuries of royal inbreeding — born into a system that valued bloodline over health. The severity of his condition was not his fault, and it’s deeply tragic that he had to live through such pain, physically and emotionally. His story deserves empathy, not ridicule. #CharlesII #HabsburgCurse #HistoryTok #RoyalHistory #SpanishSuccession #EmpathyInHistory #InbreedingInHistory #TikTokEducation #DarkHistory #KingsOfEurope #EuropeanMonarchy

Royal refuge! Today is Royal Oak Day. The date on which Parliament mandated the perpetual giving of thanks for the restoration of the Stuarts in 1660. Last week I visited the place where Charles II his as a young fugitive in 1651 in an oak. It’s next to Boscobel House, Shropshire. He spent the night hidden in this priest hole.

One of the most powerful dynasties in Europe… nearly undone by itself. Charles II, the final Habsburg king of Spain, was born into two centuries of inbreeding. A monarch who could barely speak, eat, or walk… remembered not for ruling, but for the collapse of an empire. A hereditary tragedy creating a tragedy for his royal bloodline. When you next visit Geneva, check out the stunning Brunswick Monument! This neo-Gothic mausoleum was built in 1879 to honour Charles II, Duke of Brunswick. He generously left his fortune to the city of Geneva, with the condition that this beautiful monument be erected in his memory. Inspired by the Scaliger Tombs in Verona, Italy, it’s located in the picturesque Jardin des Alpes near Lake Geneva. A true gem of the city, showcasing rich history and architectural elegance. In 1662, Catherine of Braganza married King Charles II of England, renewing and cementing a deep connection between Portugal and England that has lasted to this day. The reason for this marriage was a high-stakes gamble of geopolitical and financial considerations. England needed gold and ports to rebuild its economy, while the Portuguese sought protection through England’s significant military. The political necessities of this union are no longer relevant today, but the legacies it left are apparent today. One of these legacies was in a small wooden box—Catherine’s personal supply of tea, or chá!. Portugal was in need of allies, and Catherine was a powerful way to achieve this. Her mother, Luisa de Guzmán, was the main architect of securing an alliance with England through Catherine, and the marriage to Charles II took place in 1662. As part of the deal, England promised to support Portugal’s claim to independence, and in return, England gained Bombay and Tangiers as well as access to Brazil and the East Indies. Charles also received a large cash payment, although this was never paid in full. First impressions in England were not good. Catherine was Catholic, a factor that had led to much opposition to the marriage. Because of her religion, she also could not be officially crowned in an Anglican ceremony. The Jewels of the #EnglishCrown at the #TowerOfLondon 👑🇬🇧 The jewels of the English Crown consist of the gifts and objects worn by the sovereign or worn during the coronation ceremony or during other state ceremonies. The collective term groups the following kinds of objects: crowns, sceptres, globes, swords, rings and a series of sacred vestements, as well as many ceremonial objects. Many of these date back to eras before the Protestant Reformation and as such have a religious and sacred connotation set on a Catholic symbolism. For example, the typical clothes of the monarch at the coronation include a white Dalmatian similar to the one worn by the deacon in the Catholic liturgy. Crown jewels were traditionally kept in the @thetoweroflondon since 1303, after they were stolen from @westminsterabbeylondon. After the coronation of Charles II, they were definitively placed safely in the Tower of London behind a special protective cage and could be visited by the public against payment of a fee to the guardian of the tower. However, this tradition came to an end when Colonel Thomas Blood attempted to steal the Crown’s jewellery after gagging and beating the caretaker. Subsequently, the jewels were locked in a part of the tower, the so-called Jewel House, where armed guards are still available for Defence. In 1843 Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom appointed the @garrard, with the role of jewellers of the Crown, with the task of producing the pieces of gold and silver available to the services of the royal family, as well as with the obligation to take care of the restoration and maintenance of the crown jewels. This company also realised, among others, the imperial crown of India, as well as the cutting of the famous diamond Koh-i-Noor. The security of the Tower of London is guaranteed by a guardhouse of 22 guards who have been present in the Waterloo Block since 1845. The jewels can be moved from their location only with the authorization of the lord chamberlain, responsible for the court. #JewelsOfTheEnglishCrown #TowerOfLondon #PaestumTravelAndLeisure

This may be the strangest thing I’ve ever purchased from Amazon. These pooches apparently started to gain traction during the reign of Charles II (1630-1685), but had a resurgence in popularity because of Queen Victoria’s pet spaniel, Dash. Dash lived a full and robust life at Victoria’s side, and was buried in Windsor. ••• ••• ••• History of interior design | history of decorations | home design history | quirky history | unusual history tidbits | diy home renovations | DIY home design |

📜 Introducing a Numismatic Marvel: The 1728 Bolivia 4 Reales Heart Cut Coin 📜 We are excited to present a rare gem in our collection: a 1728 Bolivia 4 Reales Heart Cut coin, a remarkable piece of numismatic history. This unique coin, with XF Details graded by NGC, is a testament to the rich heritage of colonial Spanish America. The heart-shaped design of this coin, known as the Sacred Heart Cob, is deeply tied to the Catholic symbol of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, representing divine love and devotion. These heart-shaped coins, minted in Potosí under the reign of Charles II and continued under Philip V, were likely created as votive offerings, aligning with the popular religious movements of the late 1600s inspired by Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque’s visions. This particular coin, bearing the assayer’s mark “M” and the date “1728,” is featured as Plate Coin #1430a in J. Pellicer i Bru’s “El Medio Duro.” It is an ex-Pellicer i Bru plate coin, adding to its prestige and historical significance. The Sacred Heart Cobs are highly sought after due to their rarity and the mystery surrounding their purpose. They were produced in limited numbers, with few surviving examples today. The heart cut, combined with the historical context, makes this coin a fascinating piece for collectors and historians alike. Acquiring such a coin is not only a testament to its numismatic value but also a connection to the rich cultural and religious history of the time. This 1728 Bolivia 4 Reales Heart Cut coin is a tangible link to the past, embodying the devotion and craftsmanship of its era. Join us in celebrating this extraordinary coin and delve into the captivating history it represents. Whether you are a seasoned collector or new to numismatics, this piece is sure to inspire and amaze. #Numismatics #RareCoins #Bolivia #HistoricalTreasure #CoinCollector #PremierRareCoins #SacredHeartCob #PotosíMint #17thCentury ✨ Discover more about this coin and our collection at Premier Rare Coins! ✨
