Briefly: The image shows the test rods of the Chernobyl Nuclear Reactor. In the image on the left, they appear as they should, but their irregular appearance in the image on the right suggests a problem. More awaits you in my account! For those who are curious: The control rods at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant played a critical role in the 1986 accident. Their primary function was to slow down or completely stop nuclear fission in the reactor. Control rods are made from neutron-absorbing materials such as boron, silver, and indium, and as they are inserted into the reactor core, they suppress the chain reaction. The control rods in the RBMK-type reactors used at Chernobyl had a serious design flaw. The tips of the rods were not neutron absorbers, but made of graphite. Graphite is a material that slows down neutrons, increasing the probability of fission. Therefore, when the control rods first entered the core, instead of calming the reactor, they briefly increased reactivity. During the 1986 experiment, when the emergency shutdown system was activated, the control rods simultaneously began descending into the core. However, because the graphite tips entered the core first, a sudden and very powerful surge of power occurred at the bottom of the reactor. This unexpected surge became uncontrollable within seconds, triggering the process that led to the reactor's explosion.Furthermore, it took a considerable amount of time for the control rods to fully enter the core in RBMK reactors. This slowness made it difficult to quickly shut down the reactor in an emergency. Both the graphite tip design and the mechanical delay transformed the control rods from a safety device into a significant part of the disaster in the Chernobyl accident. Following the accident, the design of the control rods in RBMK reactors was modified, the graphite tips were removed, and the emergency shutdown systems were accelerated. This event is considered one of the most striking examples of how even seemingly small details in nuclear reactor design can have enormous consequences. #Chernobyl #nuclear #mystery #reactor #scientific less

☢️ The control panel of Unit 4 looks unusual today because it was never preserved as a museum after the 1986 accident. In the years that followed, parts of the equipment were removed for investigation, decontamination, and reuse at other operating reactors. As a result, many buttons and instruments were dismantled, which is why the control room now appears partially stripped. There are rumors that the original AZ-5 button was stolen, as it became one of the most symbolic objects linked to the disaster. However, this has never been officially confirmed. It may have simply been removed during decontamination or later dismantling works and lost in the process - which is also a very possible scenario.

Putin was a KGB officer in 1986, stationed in East Germany (Dresden), not in Ukraine or Belarus where the events took place. Any viral clips or memes suggesting a "young Putin" character are fan-made edits or jokes, not from the actual show. The miniseries has sparked memes and discussions (especially in Russia, where it faced criticism), but no official depiction of Putin exists in it. If you're thinking of a specific clip or scene, it's likely a fan creation! The series focuses on real historical figures like Valery Legasov (Jared Harris), Boris Shcherbina (Stellan Skarsgård), Anatoly Dyatlov (Paul Ritter), and others involved in the 1986 disaster response. There are KGB officials portrayed (e.g., Charkov, played by Alan Williams), but none resemble or represent Putin. #chernobylhbo #hbo #hboseries #miniseries #chernobyl

↘️ The Elephant's Foot at Chernobyl is one of the most dangerous objects ever created, a deadly mass formed during the 1986 nuclear meltdown in Ukraine. ⤵️ When the reactor exploded, molten nuclear fuel, concrete, steel, and sand fused into a boiling lava-like blob that cooled into a solid mound. Its wrinkled drooping shape gave it the nickname "Elephant's Foot." At first standing near it for even a few minutes meant certain death from extreme radiation. 🔥 Though weakened over time, the Elephant's Foot remains a haunting symbol of the disaster, a reminder of how powerful unpredictable and destructive nuclear energy can be when things go wrong. Pressing the AZ-5 button sealed the reactor’s fate due to a catastrophic design flaw in the control rods themselves. While the main body of the rods consisted of boron designed to absorb neutrons and safely kill the nuclear reaction, their tips were made of graphite, a material that actually accelerates the reaction. Because the operators had previously withdrawn almost all the rods completely out of the core, pressing AZ-5 meant these graphite tips entered first, simultaneously displacing cooling water that was also helping to absorb neutrons. For a few crucial seconds, this created a massive, localized power surge at the bottom of the core instead of the intended shutdown. The intense heat instantly vaporized the remaining cooling water into high-pressure steam and swelled the surrounding fuel channels, physically jamming the rods just one-third of the way down. The boron never reached the core to stop the reaction, causing the power level to multiply uncontrollably until the immense steam pressure blew the 1,000-ton biological shield right off the reactor. . #physicslord #physicsmeme #physicslove #physicswallah #nuclearphysics #nuclearpower #chernobyl #nuclearreactor #reactor

Chernobyl is a gripping historical drama based on the real-life nuclear disaster that occurred in April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Soviet Ukraine. The series follows the events leading up to the explosion, the devastating aftermath, and the heroic efforts of scientists, firefighters, and government officials who risked their lives to prevent an even greater catastrophe. Central characters include Valery Legasov, a Soviet nuclear physicist, Boris Shcherbina, a government official, and Ulana Khomyuk, a composite character representing scientists who investigated the cause. Through its intense storytelling, Chernobyl exposes the dangers of secrecy and misinformation, and the high cost of truth in the face of political pressure. #science #chernobyl #movieclips #movie #instagram

In the aftermath of the reactor explosion, confusion and misinformation spread faster than radiation itself. Officials downplay readings, protocols fail under pressure, and the cost of silence begins to outweigh the cost of truth. The series builds its power through detail and consequence. Scientists challenge authority with facts, first responders walk into lethal exposure unaware of the danger, and leadership is forced to confront choices where every delay worsens the fallout. Valery Legasov’s pursuit of scientific honesty and Boris Shcherbina’s evolution under pressure form the moral backbone of the story. Grim and unforgettable, Chernobyl is not just a historical drama—it’s a warning. It shows how systems collapse when truth is suppressed, and how accountability, though painful, is the only way to prevent catastrophe from repeating itself. 🎬 Genre: Historical | Drama | Thriller ⭐ Cast: Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård, Emily Watson 📺 Where to Watch: HBO | Max 📩 DM for credit or removal #Chernobyl #TrueStory #HistoricalDrama #TVReels #ViralReels

"What is the cost of lies?... When the truth offends we lie until we can no longer remember the truth is even there but it is still there. Every lie we tell incurs a debt to the truth. Sooner or later that debt is paid... So, that's how a RBMK reactor core explodes..Lies!" Professor Legasov's testimony in the trial following the nuclear disaster on April 25th 1986 in Chernobyl. Gorbachev would later recount the nuclear meltdown in Chernobyl as the beginning of the end of the Soviet Union. #hbo #chernobyl #sovietunion #cinema #nuclearenergy #art #engineering #physics #history

Creator/writer Craig Mazin originally intended for the characters to speak with Russian accents, but quickly abandoned this idea after the interview process began, as the accents became a distraction for the actors. An accurate number of deaths caused by Chernobyl in the years following the disaster will never be known, as a 1988 decree from the Kremlin prevented doctors from citing radiation as a cause of death or illness. Astonishingly, the three remaining reactors at Chernobyl remained operational and manned after the 1986 explosion of Reactor No. 4. Chernobyl Reactor No. 2 was shut down after a fire in 1991, Reactor No. 1 was shut down in 1996 after pressure from foreign governments, and Reactor No. 3 was closed in 2000. The decommissioning process, whereby the facility is dismantled to the point that it no longer requires radiation protection, is ongoing as of 2024. It is estimated that decommissioning will not be completed until 2065, 79 years after the disaster. Series: Chernobyl

When the reactor explodes, the real danger lies not only in radiation but in denial—officials refuse to accept reality, protocols are blindly followed, and precious time is lost while contamination spreads unchecked. The series thrives on realism and restraint. There are no dramatic rescues or heroic speeches—only grim decisions, scientific arguments, and moral reckoning. Firefighters, engineers, and miners step into lethal conditions with little understanding of the cost, while scientists fight a system that punishes honesty. Valery Legasov’s pursuit of truth and Boris Shcherbina’s transformation under pressure form the emotional backbone of the story. Unsettling and unforgettable, Chernobyl is more than historical drama—it’s a warning. It shows how lies, once normalized, can be as destructive as any explosion, and why accountability is the only force capable of stopping disaster from repeating itself. 🎬 Genre: Historical | Drama | Thriller ⭐ Cast: Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård, Emily Watson 📺 Where to Watch: HBO | Max 📩 DM for credit or removal #Chernobyl #TrueStory #HistoricalDrama #TVReels #ViralReels
