Tunde Onakoya 🇳🇬 A Chess Master and founder of Chess Slum on day two of the @dldconference , played a simultaneous chess match against 10 players at once. After an almost two hour battle of wits ,he managed to win all the games. “The Chess exhibition helped us raise enough money to support the education of 100 children in our academy. One of the toughest opponents I played during this match holds a PhD in Mathematical logic, was Chairman of the United Nations security council and a former Bulgarian foreign minister. It was a hard game. He came up to me after the match and we had such a lovely conversation afterwards. The beauty of chess really is in the way it connects us as a universal language regardless of our background. I definitely made the kids proud with this one.” 🎥 @tunde_onakoya #amplifyafrica #blackexcellence #africa #chess #chessmaster #dld

Jon Jones made finishing look effortless. From spinning elbows to ruthless ground-and-pound, he didn’t just end fights, he made statements. Each finish reminded the world why he’s feared across divisions. But what truly separates him is his fight IQ. Jones reads opponents like a chess master, adjusting in real-time and dismantling legends with precision and patience. No rush. No panic. Just control and calculation. Every move had purpose. Every strike had timing. Jon Jones didn’t just win fights. He solved them. CC @profightuniverse #JonJones #UFC #FightIQ #MMA #GOAT

Harvard data scientist and Chess Master Mark Glickman published research redesigning the chess rating system
Chess’s traditional Elo system treats ties as equivalent to half a win and half a loss, which can lead to rating stagnation at upper levels, where tying is the norm. In fact, up to 70% of games end in ties at top tournaments Glickman’s new system, which recognizes that stronger players tie more than weaker players, is the first to model draw probability based on player strength The model, which allows a full point to be awarded after draws instead of half a point, enables high-level players to receive more accurate ratings The ICCF, which adopted the system over the past couple years, says that it is “performing well” Glickman has now published the results broadly, and said it could be useful in other sports where ties are common, such as soccer, boxing, and cricket He said his system creates “much more accurate probabilities of wins, losses, and draws – draws in particular,” and that previous systems assumed draws happened at the same rate regardless of how strong the competitors were. The federation became the first major sports organization to use a rating system that recognizes ties become more likely as competitors get stronger FIDE — the leading chess body — has not yet adopted the system Follow @ridethenews for daily news & mini-docs

The Devil’s Checkmate (1831) By Friedrich Moritz August Retzsch 📍 Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, United States In this dramatic scene, Retzsch portrays a young man locked in a chess match against the Devil, with his soul seemingly at stake. At first glance, the position on the board appears hopeless — a clear checkmate. Years later, chess master Paul Morphy carefully studied the painting and noticed something remarkable: the young man was not actually defeated. There was still one move that could place the Devil in check and completely change the outcome of the game. What seems like a story of inevitable damnation transforms into a powerful symbol of hope. Even when everything appears lost, one intelligent move can still alter destiny. 👉 Follow @explainingpaintings if you love discovering the hidden meanings behind timeless masterpieces.
