DRPlants are green because they use green photosynthetic pigments to harvest sunlight energy. These pigments are located in the cells that perform photosynthesis, specifically in organelles called chloroplasts.

Interestingly, plants also use photosynthetic pigments that are not green. Most of the time we can’t see these other pigments because their colors get overpowered by the green color pigments.

However, when the Fall season comes, the green color pigments break down and therefore the green color of the leaves disappears. This is the moment where the other photosynthetic pigments start becoming visible and this is why leaves turn from green into other colors (yellow or orange).

Some plants will also produce another type of pigment at the same time as the green photosynthetic pigments disappear. This new pigment is anthocyanin. The color of anthocyanin is red/purple.

Anthocyanins are not directly involved in photosynthesis. The function of anthocyanins is to act as a protective filter against solar radiation.

The intense red/purple color of anthocyanins will overpower the colors of the remaining photosynthetic pigments of the leaves and that’s why some leaves turn red/purple in the Fall.

The photosynthetic pigments do not dissolve well in water. This is why I used acetone (an organic solvent) to extract them from the leaves.

To separate and observe the different pigments that leavesof different colors have, I did paper chromatography experiments (I used 9 parts of Ether and 1 part of Acetone as solvent in the chromatography experiments).
