SAThis Easter I said goodbye to my family for four weeks as I fly off to Seattle for my first Carmen. Feelings are mixed. There’s excitement and happiness about the adventure that awaits me but if I’m honest, it’s drowned out by longing and heartache already missing my family. As I kissed my younger daughter goodbye I said ‘four weeks, we can do hard things’ and she said ‘we’ve done 11 weeks!’ Which is true. About a year ago I was in Europe for that long and thankfully they came to visit. Today we had wanted to do a cake making contest and an Easter egg hunt and a church service together but the time ticked away and I let the girls sleep in. Little things that normally don’t strike me seemed incredibly beautiful and special. That is one silver lining of the traveling life- you see more clearly small gifts that normally you might take for granted. In many ways, saying goodbye is a gift.
I like to say a lot of things get easier the more you do them. And in some ways that’s true! Life hacks, performing hacks, the jet lag, singing under the weather, managing nerves, airbnbs, work life balance, packing. But I still feel tremendous heart pangs leaving my family. Time is our most precious commodity after all and where we spend it, it’s spent. I’m lucky to have two incredible and independent kids and a strong partner who somehow holds down the fort, drives the kids all over creation (hello AAU basketball) while now teaching a full studio at IU. I’m not really sure how we get from one day to the next but we do. They do. And little by little time will pass and I’ll be home soon.
