JAIn late 2024, scientists in South Africa identified a curious new strain of COVID-19. It was genetically unusual, carrying more than 70 mutations in its spike protein, and seemed to have re-emerged after years of quiet circulation—earning the nickname “Cicada”, after the insect that resurfaces after long periods underground. By early 2026, wastewater samples and clinical tests confirmed its presence in 25 U.S. states and at least 23 countries.
The Cicada variant spreads much like other Omicron descendants, with symptoms including sore throat, fever, fatigue, congestion, cough, and body aches. Some anecdotal reports mention skin reactions such as rashes or allergy-like spots on the hands, but these are not yet recognized as defining symptoms.
