More than 170,000 mirrors reflect sunlight toward boilers on top of three towers, creating steam to generate electricity. From an engineering perspective, the idea was impressive. From a business perspective, the results were more mixed. The plant reportedly generates around $30 million in annual revenue, which is relatively low compared to its construction cost. High operating and maintenance expenses made profitability difficult. At the same time, traditional solar panels became cheaper, simpler, and more efficient, reducing the advantage of Ivanpah’s complex design. Over time, operations were scaled down.
