Steven Spielberg followed his blockbuster JAWS (1975) with his screenplay about a family man (Richard Dreyfuss) whose life is changed by an encounter with a UFO. Legendary director François Truffaut co-stars with Teri Garr and Oscar-nominated Melinda Dillon.
While the film’s visuals received well-deserved acclaim, the sonic elements were equally important in creating a genuinely awe-inspiring moviegoing experience. John Williams’s nominated music is a key part of the film’s narrative. Robert Knudson, Robert J. Glass, Don MacDougall, and Gene S. Cantamessa were nominated for their sound mixing, and Frank E. Warner’s sound effects editing earned a Special Achievement Award.

El padre de Spielberg era matemático y la madre música. Está claro que parte de la inspiración para decidir cómo iban a lograr comunicarse seres humanos y extraterrestres viene de esa herencia familiar. Lo mejor de todo es que el realizador estadounidense no fue consciente de ello hasta que se le planteó en un programa de televisión mucho tiempo después.
El clip que comparto con vosotros es parte de un tramo asombroso, donde lo desconocido deja de ser una amenaza y se convierte en algo cercano que habla en colores y ecos. Un ballet de luces y sonidos para establecer un diálogo que prescinde del lenguaje convencional para adentrarse en lo universal. Es deslumbrante.
En diciembre de 2007, la Biblioteca del Congreso de los Estados Unidos consideró la película de Spielberg “cultural, histórica o estéticamente significativa” y la seleccionó para su preservación en el Registro Nacional de Cine. Esto, sumado a su tratamiento serio de una temática siempre controvertida y apasionante, y a su influencia en largometrajes posteriores, convierten a ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ en una de las películas de ciencia ficción referenciales. Un hito narrativo y técnico que dio a luz toda una experiencia sensorial destinada a perdurar en el tiempo como una de las joyas del séptimo arte.

ZIIt is site that had lent itself to myths and legends for centuries. Long before Steven Speilberg made Devils Tower the alien landing pad in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Lakota legend held that the fluted sides of Devils Tower were caused by a mighty bear raking the rock with his claws in an attempt to reach nine maidens who clambered onto a rock, praying to the Great Spirit to save them. He raised the rock straight up out of the ground as a column, allowing the maidens to ascend into the sky and become what we call the Pleiades constellation.
There’s no mistaking it: rising 1,267 feet out of the plains leading to the Black Hills like the stump of some titanic petrified tree. It is Devils Tower.
(A typo in the Act of Congress establishing it as America’s first National Monument back in 1906 accidentally left out the apostraphe, so it is not, in fact, spelled “Devil’s Tower”).

The iconic John Williams score was created before the film was edited. Steven Spielberg edited the film to match the music, a reverse of what is usually done in the film scoring process. Both Spielberg and Williams felt that it ultimately gave the film a lyrical feel — a rhythm that comes alive again this weekend at the Paramount 🎶
