Cold exposure may reduce inflammation in the brain by reprogramming the immune system. Cold promotes the browning of adipose tissue, which creates an energetic trade-off at the expense of T cell activation: a benefit in the context of neuroinflammation. The animal study showed that that cold exposure reduces the activation of white blood cells in the bone marrow, in the circulation, and in the central nervous system. Consequently, this decreases the activation of pathogenic T cells during neuroinflammation. One of the most consistent and robust responses to cold exposure is an increase in norepinephrine which acts as a hormone in the periphery and increases brown adipose tissue production. This hugely energetically demanding process triages energy away from pathogenic white blood cell activation in the context of autoimmune disease. However, the tradeoff may be increased susceptibility to viral infection. Note: This was demonstrated in *animal research*, which is always an important caveat. Still, a very interesting effect if the mechanism ends up being conserved in humans it may offer some therapeutic benefit to people with autoimmune disease... especially if you're a cold-water immersion junky! Cold water immersion is an excellent way for firefighters to build mental strength, and I personally have found it is helpful in dealing with my PTSD. It also helps recover after a hard day of working/training. The union bought these tubs from @tractorsupply for all the stations, and many of us use it daily. But yes, we get calls when we are in them, and yes, you are cold on those calls. Good thing the body naturally warms up. why I swear by cold exposure. It isn’t for everyone all the time. Women in their luteal and menstrual phase should avoid it. At the same time, it has way too many benefits to not do it other times. Just like breathwork and mindful meditation, cold exposure calms our mind by distracting it and refocusing it on other factors. It also lowers our heart rate, allowing us to be calmer and, therefore, less anxious. I feel great after my morning cold dip and these days it’s primarily to take care of my muscle recovery. Cold exposure isn’t about toughness, it’s about cellular training. When the body is exposed to cold, mitochondria adapt by increasing mitochondrial uncoupling. This allows protons to move through uncoupling proteins instead of being used only to make ATP. Why does that matter? Because when mitochondria are under stress, making ATP the usual way increases reactive oxygen species and toxic byproducts. Uncoupling is a protective mechanism- it reduces oxidative stress and helps cells handle metabolic pressure more efficiently.
