The Cost of the Conversations We Don't Have We’ve all had them, those conversations that burn inside, feeling so gentle and clear in our hearts, only to get stuck in our heads. We rehearse the perfect words, but then life happens. We walk through the door, a phrase is said that triggers a reaction, a few sharp words are exchanged, and the meaningful conversation we actually needed to have just… vanishes. This happens in our homes with the people we love most, but it is just as present in our work. When we look at big organizational problems and start to unpack them, we almost always find a difficult conversation that was avoided. We often try to "fix" the issue by sending people to trainings or staying vague, hoping they'll just "get it." But vagueness is a heavy weight for a team to carry. Organizational culture is a leadership problem. It is built in the silence of the things we don’t say. The inner work of an individual leader is the silent architect of the organization’s culture. When we find the courage to face our own triggers and move past the blocks that stop us from being vulnerable, we aren't just "talking", we are designing the environment everyone else lives in.
