CRI’ve been tagged in a few posts about the Stannard Road and Wondall Road intersection, so I wanted to jump on and give some context.
I understand the frustration. Sitting in traffic, especially during peak times, isn’t ideal and I know many of you use this intersection every day.
What’s important to understand is that upgrades like traffic lights aren’t a simple fix. They cost millions and must meet strict safety and design requirements. That includes space for turning lanes, pedestrian crossings, footpaths and visibility. In some cases, that can mean resuming land and loss of on-street parking which isn’t always straightforward or supported. Consideration also needs to be given to underground and over-head utilities and drainage.
This intersection has been assessed by Council’s traffic planning team and while it is on the list for future consideration, it’s not currently ranked as a high priority compared to other locations across our ward or the city.
From a safety perspective, the data shows that driver behaviour plays a big role here. Speeding, impatience and risky decisions when pulling out are contributing factors.
That said, safety will always come first. I’ve asked the team to look at what smaller improvements might be possible, like improving sight lines or other practical changes.
I’ve also put forward a request in the next budget for further intersection design work at both ends of Stannard Road so we know what is possible.
I want to keep advocating for our community, but I also need to balance that with other priorities for funding in our ward.
