ASCongratulations to Assembly District 62’s Woman of the Year, Maricela Parga! Maricela is the founder of Mujeres Unidas Sirviendo Activamente (United Women Actively Serving), based in the City of Paramount. Her vision grew from gatherings of mothers seeking to strengthen their family lives and community, evolving into a trusted organization empowering women through education, wellness, leadership, and collective service.
This year will mark the 22nd year the Despierta Mujer!Conference has helped motivate women to identify their personal strengths and apply their talents to become productive participants in their community, in their children’s education, and in their personal and professional development.

In honor of crossover in Annapolis on Monday, we highlight the advocacy work our Hermanas have done this legislative session in the artistic word salad demonstrated above.
The Solidaridad Action Committee hosted our 2nd annual lobby night this year in collaboration with Progressive Maryland. Due to the inclement weather, the lobby night was transformed into a virtual experience where Maryland Hermanas were able to meet with legislators from their districts about immigration, education, healthcare, housing and environmental justice issues.
Some special highlights from Lobby night include Tamara Zuniga, H. Temazcal emceeing the rally, and Yakie Palma, H. Acatl delivering a speech during the rally.
In addition to Lobby Night, Hermanas have been actively engaging in advocacy efforts in Annapolis and at the local council level over the past few months, supporting our communities on several fronts. In the videos, Tamara Zuniga provides testimony in support of immigrant justice, Allison Yunda, H. Securus, advocates for raising the minimum wage for domestic care workers, and Erica Puentes, H. Qikyusisa testifies in support of healthcare justice.
Stephanie Lemus-Ortiz, H. Paradigma, participated in School Counselor Legislative Day held at the General Assembly in Richmond, VA on February 4th. She met with her delegate to lobby for support of bills that would help strengthen the profession.

PO🔊 This Women’s History Month, we proudly celebrate Mariela de la Luz, a dedicated community leader whose passion for service continues to uplift our community.
Born in Chicago’s Rogers Park and raised across vibrant South Side neighborhoods including Little Village, Pilsen, and Gage Park, Mariela’s roots in Chicago run deep. Since joining PODER in February 2023, she has served as a Lead Host, helping welcome community members and connect families to important resources and opportunities.
From a young age, Mariela has been passionate about volunteering and supporting others, contributing to organizations like the Chicago Public Library and Centro Romero. She brings warmth, curiosity, and a deep love for Chicago’s communities to everything she does.
Over the next few weeks, we will be highlighting the poderosas in our community. Join us in celebrating the women whose courage, wisdom, and leadership continue to inspire and uplift generations.

SVAna Maeda Gonzalez was born and raised in Rockland County. Through her work with Proyecto Faro, NYCLU, and NAACP Young Adults, she inspires others to find their voice.
Her work as a community advocate has led to becoming PTA President, President of the ER Band Parent Association, Assistant Director of the East Ramapo Alumni Marching Band. She continues assisting in back-to-school events, food drives and toy drives.

EAThe next East Ramapo Regent Judith Johnson Shero in the spotlight is Ana Maeda Gonzalez. Growing up with her eight siblings in Rockland County, Ms. Maeda learned the value of service from her mother, Mayra Alarcon. Diagnosed with severe ADHD as a child, Ms. Maeda turned what some saw as a challenge into a superpower, excelling in the East Ramapo Marching Band, sports, clubs and drama before earning scholarships to the University of Connecticut to study nanotechnology and nanoscience.
A devoted mother and advocate for women’s and children’s rights, Ms. Maeda works with Proyecto Faro, the NYCLU, NAACP Young Adults, and local schools to empower others to find their voice. Her story shows that challenges can become strengths and that one person can create meaningful change.
