SOHow to build a container pond without a pump or filter - with award winning pond designers @du_waterscapes and amazing pond kit supplied by @aqua.eden and @aquascape_inc (all gifted for another project 💚).
This pond kit was easy to set up and came with a selection of pond plants, but you can also make your own using a water tight container and a mix of plants. It’s important that you make sure the plants are at the recommended depth so that they don’t struggle to survive!
Having lots of large rocks in the pond creates surfaces for beneficial microbes that help maintain water quality. A plant like this miniature waterlily will help provide some shade in the summer and some flowers for pollinators.
There are lots and lots of places for insects and birds to land and use the pond too. I have a larger pond sunken into the ground with a healthy population of newts, so this pond is more for pollinators, but we did create some access using some of the leftover wood so if they want to frogs and newts can climb up into the pond 🥰

CB🪷⛲️You can build a small water feature like this using any container of your choice! Ponds are a fantastic way to attract more pollinators to your garden. Early in this pond build, we quickly learned the importance of creating a stable ecosystem. Though we are still learning, here’s what has worked best for us:
- Pure Pond Balls: These introduce beneficial bacteria essential for breaking down organic waste in new ponds. Place them in a mesh bag and replace them once they disintegrate.
- Pond Prime: Removes chlorine and ammonia, making the water safe for fish and plants.
- Mosquito Bits: Add every 7-14 days during peak mosquito season to manage the mosquito life cycle until mosquito fish are introduced.
- Aquatic Plant Food Tabs: Essential for plant health in the trough, but avoid over-fertilizing to prevent excess algae growth.
With increased sunlight, algae growth is natural, but algae remover can help control it. Regular water testing and cleaning are also crucial to maintaining a healthy pond environment. These products ensure a safe, balanced, and thriving pond!

A3I've been at it again. Pond #3
While bottom watering some plants in this vintage wash tub I suddenly remembered I had an old solar fountain in the shed, and then things quickly escalated 😂
It's on the patio, so I'm hoping the water mint helps deter the mozzies, but time will tell!
If you're tempted to make one, here's a few things that *should help keep it nice:
Plants - pack 'em in and add some oxygenators (I've used Elodea here, but I have Hornwort in my other ponds) the more the merrier! You can fill with water to just above or below the surface of marginal plants.
Fountain - look for one that comes with a height adjustable spout and different heads. I've gone with a gentle bubble just above the water level to avoid water loss over the sides and splashing the plants (some really don't like it). A long lead between the solar panel and fountain is really useful to ensure you get it working for as much of the day as possible.
Escape log - always add a means of escape for any creature that might end up in your pond, you don't want it filling with drowned bees!
Lastly, please don't be tempted to put any fish in any container pond - they need a LOT more space and proper filtration.
All week I've been seeing mating Damselflies in the garden, so hopefully they'll enjoy this additional egg laying option.

I’ve always tried to make my outdoor spaces a little sanctuary for wildlife, and l adding another small pond in my new flower bed felt like the perfect step to boost biodiversity in the garden.
You don’t need a huge space to add a pond, even a small container pond like this can make a huge difference.
I have two container ponds (this one and one in an old ceramic sink) and have find @the_rhs guide ‘How to make a wildlife container pond’ super helpful in setting them up!

PLDIY mini fish pond..
Steps:
1. I have used a small cement tank and painted outside with acrylic.
2. Added a driftwood
3. Used a pennywort plant which is planned in a container.
4. Added gravel and pebbles. This will help the pond to be cooler.
5. Added water cabbage which is a floating aquatic plant.
6. Added guppy fish which prevents mosquitoes.

GRMini Garden Pond Part 3⛲️🪷
After a few months with the two terracotta pots and pond liner sandwiched between them, I decided to go back to finding a fish safe sealant. I didn’t like how shallow the water was because the base pot and top pot didn’t sit flush against one another and so the top pot only filled halfway up.
The pond shop recommended non toxic epoxy paint by Pond Armor. I only needed about a third of the paint and added some alcohol to thin it out. It was pretty easy to paint with and cured within 24 hours. I used a piece of my pond liner and silicone sealant to plug the hole. I filled with water to see how it would hold up and I’m really happy with the results. It holds water all the way to the brim and the black interior creates a reflective surface. I added a small pump, mosquito dunk, and aquatic plants. Maybe a frog or two will settle in and help me with my slugs 🐌🐸

THThis container pond has been the best thing I added to the garden this year! So, so much fun!
And these Ruby Red minnows sure do their job well! I have had zero issues with mosquito or other larva growing in the pond. And they are so fun to watch.

I've absolutely loved giving this old Belfast sink a new lease of life & the boys love it too!
