Upon being called to the stage to receive her degree, she expressed her frustration with the university’s management by saying, “Thank you for giving respect after insulting us” (बेइज्जती करके इज्जत देने का बहुत-बहुत शुक्रिया).
This protest stemmed from an earlier decision by the administration to not allow all students to receive their degrees on stage, which had sparked an immediate and angry demonstration from the graduates who had traveled with their families for the milestone event.
Following the student backlash, the university reversed its stance, and the Deputy Chief Minister was brought back to the stage to personally hand out the degrees, during which Ismail made her now-famous comment.
