Here is how I made this silk screen and stepped closer to branding my creative business: 1. Buy a screen print photo emulsion mix, a squeegee and a silk screen frame. I use @speedball_art supplies. 2. Create your image by hand or digitally. 3. Get this image printed on acetate at a copy shop. 4. Cover your screen with emulsion and wait for it to dry. 5. Get a 500w lightbulb from a photo store and find a way to create a 12” gap between your screen and the light source. 6. Place acetate onto the dried emulsion screen and put glass overtop. 7. Burn the screen by exposing it to the light. This took 8minutes which was the perfect amount of time for my emulsion thickness, bulb wattage, image, screen and distance between image and bulb. 8. Wash out screen to reveal image. 9. Dry well. 10. Print! Straight-forward? Nope. Check out my highlights for more context on the process and the fails along the way. The take home here is that you can bootstrap your imagination and learn serious skills in branding your creative biz on your own. These prints are the front pieces of my new line of l’il flower presses for l’il hands. Voici une petite vidéo de la technique que j’utilise parfois pour transférer mes dessins sur la plaque de lino. - J’imprime mon dessin avec une imprimante laser. Je n’en ai pas. Je vais au magasin de photocopies. - J’applique une couche fine et régulière de médium acrylique mate (dans la vidéo, c’est pas très régulier car je n’ai pas bien nettoyé mon pinceau) - J’aplanis bien la feuille et j’enlève les bulles d’air avec une règle ou un plioir. - J’attends que ça sèche bien. J’attends généralement jusqu’au lendemain. Profitez en pour bien laver votre pinceau. - Le lendemain donc, je détrempe la feuille avec un chiffon mouillé, jusqu’à ce qu’elle se dissolve puis je frotte délicatement pour l’enlever sans enlever le dessin transféré. C’est la partie délicate de l’opération. Il peut rester parfois à certains endroits une petite « peau » de papier un peu pénible quand on grave. Je garde un peu d’eau à portée de main pour l’enlever avec les doigts au fur et à mesure. . . . Here is a short video of the technique I sometimes use to transfer my drawings on the lino plate. - I print my design with a laser printer. I don’t have one. I go to the copy shop. - I apply a thin, even layer (in the video, it’s not very even because I didn’t clean my brush very well) of matte acrylic medium. - I apply my print, drawing towards the plate. - I flatten the sheet and remove air bubbles with a ruler or a folding knife. - I wait for it to dry well. Take the opportunity to wash your brush. I usually wait until the next day. - With a wet cloth, I soak the sheet until it dissolves and then gently rub it off without removing the transferred design. This is the tricky part of the process. Sometimes a little « skin » of paper can remain in some places.
