Count Basie - One O’Clock Jump. Count Basie (August 21, 1904 - April 26, 1984). William “Count” Basie built one of jazz’s most enduring empires not by playing more notes, but by playing fewer. Born in Red Bank, New Jersey, and raised on vaudeville stages, Basie absorbed the blues-drenched piano styles of Fats Waller and carried them west to Kansas City in the 1930s. There, his orchestra defined the sound of swing: riffs stacked in layers, a rhythm section so tight it was dubbed the “All American Rhythm Section,” and a band that knew how to make a dance floor move without breaking a sweat. His 1936 hit One O’Clock Jump became a jazz anthem, while stars like Lester Young, Jo Jones, and Freddie Green cut their teeth in his ranks. Even as the big-band era faded, Basie kept the music alive reinventing his orchestra, collaborating with Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra, and proving that swing could be both relaxed and razor sharp. His greatest gift wasn’t just leading a band; it was showing the world that space, groove, and understatement could swing harder than any wall of sound.

Although she performed with such jazz greats as Count Basie, Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie, and Earl Hines, Vi Redd is rarely discussed in jazz history books except for those focusing specifically on female jazz musicians. The summer of 1968 she made a guest appearance with the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet at the Newport Jazz Festival. At one point Dizzy introduced her as “a young lady who has been enjoyed many times before...” Later while she warmed up, Dizzy interjected, “That’s close enough to jazz,” convulsing the audience once again. But despite all the male #chauvinism she endured, Vi Redd fluffed it off and played a fine, Bird-inspired solo on “Lover Man.” Vi collaborated successfully with Count Basie and his orchestra in 1968. One of the songs was “Stormy Monday Blues” that brought together her strengths both as a vocalist and as an instrumentalist. The orchestra gave her plenty of space to play with soulful singing and the effervescent chord progressions that made her music so pleasing. Her dedication to and mastery of jazz music has paved the way for many other talented women instrumentalists.
