➡️Nighttime crate training feels emotional. You hear a whine and immediately wonder if you’re doing it wrong. 👉A few things about what you’re seeing here: I filmed this during the day, not at night. The puppies are more awake than they would be overnight. These reactions are closer to what you’d see during daytime crate work, but I wanted to show you the proper setup. 👉The crate sits right by your bed. Use a towel or blanket to cover the top some puppies settle better with coverage, others need to see you. That’s trial and error on your part. I use it halfway as you see it. ✅ I play calming music every night, very low, looped through the entire night. This creates association. Music means bedtime, time to relax, time to sleep. 👉At the end you’ll see me open the crate door to let the puppy out. Watch how calm it stays. No big deal, no excitement, no words. You cannot open the door in response to crying or protesting. Just like daytime work even if you only get one to two seconds of calm, that’s when the door opens. 👉If you think your puppy needs to use the bathroom, it stays calm and neutral. No excitement, no play, no treats. Straight out, let them go, straight back in. Don’t set an alarm thinking you’ll take them out before they wake up. That teaches them to get up at that exact time every single night. Wait for them to signal you. 👉Brief protest in a brand new routine is normal. That doesn’t mean distress. My job isn’t to react to every sound - it’s to read the puppy in front of me. Confusion sounds different than panic. Restlessness looks different than urgency. ✅At 8 to 10 weeks, one to two potty trips overnight is normal. Early morning wake-ups around 3 to 5am are often hunger-related as their bodies regulate blood sugar. Puppies are also very active sleepers. Movement alone doesn’t mean they need out. 👉Night training isn’t cry it out. And it’s not immediate rescue either. It’s calm structure. Presence without creating dependency. Security without overstimulation. ➡️The goal is confidence, not silence. ✅Train your puppy starting on day one! empoweredpuppyschool.com #puppytraining #cratetraining #puppysleep #dogtrainingtips #newpuppy

Most people get crate training backwards. A puppy who sleeps through the night isn’t “fixed” at 10pm… they’re set up all day long. Here are the 5 moves (and 4 of them happen BEFORE bedtime): 1) Feed every meal in the crate. Meals = value. Value = comfort. Comfort = sleep. 2) Crate time during the day (while you’re nearby). Give a high-value bone / lick mat / frozen Kong and let them chill while you’re in the same room. 3) Build duration + let naps happen in the crate. If they conk out? Great. Let that nap happen in the crate so it becomes their “safe, sleepy place.” 4) Don’t “cry it out.” No “just let them whine.” That doesn’t teach confidence— it teaches stress (and can create crate/kennel anxiety). Instead the hour before bedtime give your puppy brain games and new training tricks to learn that create a calm, focused brain and do NOT try to run them around to tire them out. 5) Nighttime = crate RIGHT next to your bed + last-minute only. Bedroom crate so they can see you. And don’t put them in there early while you’re still moving around. Crate them when you’re ready to turn the lights off and lay down—then you’re instantly right there. BONUS: Middle-of-the-night potty = silent mission. No talking. No hype. No treats. Out → pee → back in → lights out. Because your very smart Aussie will absolutely learn that 3AM is party time if you teach them that. 😅 Save this for night 1️⃣, tag a new puppy parent, and tell me—are you team “crate in the bedroom” or were you told to put it in another room? (Honestly I was told for years, just let the puppy cried out in the other room, and it was a flip of a coin, whether it worked or made the dog a train wreck. This method works every single time.)#puppytrainingtips #cratetraining #miniaussiepuppy #cratetrainingsuccess #newpuppyparents

Some may not agree with crate training and THAT. IS. OK!✨ 🐾We are not here to change anyone’s mind, we’re just here to share what works in our lives and our home with OUR dogs.🐾 🏡 We started crate training from day one of each dog coming home. We believe it gives them a place to go to decompress when the day gets loud, and a safe space they can relax, turn off, and get a proper sleep. Without a crate, I’m sure kiwi would be up all night pacing. She is a very alert girl and loves to be on guard. So we give her the break her body needs. Gizmo is 13, Kiwi 7 and Kash 5 and all 3 of them RUN excitedly to their respective crates at bed time, and settle in. They have plush comfy beds that are updated as needed for joint protection and all the blankies they could manage. So tell me if you crate in your house! Why or why not? (No wrong answers here) Let’s have a conversation 😊 #cratetraining #doberman #dogmom #dailylife

Most new puppy owners accidentally create anxiety. Not because they’re doing too little. Because they’re doing too much. It feels loving to respond to every sound. It feels instinctual to rush in when they cry. And let’s be honest — it’s not easy to ignore them. But here’s what’s happening neurologically: When a puppy vocalizes and we immediately respond every time, their brain wires this pattern: Distress → Human appears → Relief That creates dependence, not resilience. What we actually want to build is: Distress → Self-soothe → Nervous system settles → Confidence grows That’s how emotional regulation is formed. Crating while they can see you isn’t mean. It’s controlled exposure. They learn: • You are nearby • They are safe • They can calm themselves • The world doesn’t fall apart when you don’t rush in Yes — the first few nights can be hard. Yes — listening to some crying pulls on you. But there’s a difference between: • Light protest/adjustment whining and • True panic screaming Protest builds tolerance. Panic needs support. The goal isn’t to ignore blindly. The goal is to respond intentionally. Predictable naps. Safe separation. Structured downtime. Overtired puppies cannot regulate. And over-stimulated puppies become chaotic teenagers. Calm dogs are raised. Not hoped for. You are not being cold. You are teaching emotional stability. That’s long-term love. #PuppyTraining #CalmDog #CrateTraining #EmotionalRegulation #YankeeDoodlePup

Most people make the same mistake when their puppy whines in the crate — and it accidentally teaches them to cry MORE! When your puppy cries in their crate, your instinct is to rush in and comfort them. Completely understandable. But if you go to them every time they whine, you’re actually teaching them that crying = you appearing. And the whining gets louder. And longer. Every. Single. Night. 😭 Here’s what to do instead: ✅ Wait for a pause in the whining before you go to them — even just 2 seconds of quiet counts ✅ Check they’re not genuinely distressed (there’s a difference between protest whining and panic) ✅ Make sure the crate is set up correctly BEFORE you expect them to settle — most dogs whine because the crate doesn’t feel safe yet, not because they’re being naughty ✅ Go back to basics with your crate introduction — slow and rewarding wins every time Crate training done right = a dog who LOVES their crate and settles within minutes. By 13 weeks old, she could stay in her crate alone at home for 1-2 hours! We started to teach independence from the first day she came home. This was a priority for us because we both have to work in office Before starting this training, make sure your puppy has been fed and taken to potty 🚽💩 ✅ How we taught independence 15 minute short sessions. Keep it brief! 1. Set up a safe playpen area for your puppy. *Option to put in a safe chew toy or frozen treat to start* 2. Stay nearby to supervise. Ignore your puppy for 15 minutes. Do your own thing (doomscroll / read a book) *No eye contact! No talking!* 3. Open and close doors randomly to desensitize the sounds of doors 4. Expect barking to happen 5. When your puppy stops barking, QUIETLY drop a treat and walk away. *No praise. No interaction* Short 15 minute sessions, 3 times a day. They learn good things happen when they are calm! ⭐️ Rules: - No eye contact - No talking to the puppy - No command cues “quiet,” “no barking,” or “no” - Completely ignore the barking A playpen safely teaches a puppy how to be alone and learn to self regulate when you are nearby. Starting this before crate training will help build their tolerance away from you. They learn that being alone is safe and temporary. Overtime they learn alone time is a part of their daily routine. This helps prevent separation anxiety from forming. 🛑Signs to stop - Continuous high pitched screaming - Frantic pacing or heavy panting - Drooling (from stress) Shorten the duration! ***Disclaimer: I am not a dog trainer! Just a girl training her dog*** #independence #puppytips #cratetraining #separationanxiety #alonetime

Now I know that crate training is something that I do waffle on about a lot! But I truly believe that all dog owners should crate train their dogs. It’s such a powerful tool for dogs to have a safe space where they are happy and comfortable. And best of all is that crate training can be so fun for your dog when done the right way - your dog will love going in their crate for some time to decompress and relax #cratetraining #gotrainingtips #dogtraining
