Protect your Crepe Myrtle now!!! There is a relatively new insect infestation that is sweeping across the Southern United States. It's called Crepe Myrtle bark scale(CMBS). CMBS appears as white or gray bumps on the trunk and branches of the tree. This insect will lodge under the loose exfoliating bark of the plant where it will feed on the juices of the tree. In turn, the scale produces a sugary waste product resulting in the formation of a black sooty mold throughout. It is said that CMBS will not kill the host but only cause severe aesthetic damage. If it is not caught in time the crepe myrtle will turn completely black and will have difficulty leafing out in the spring (if it even leaves out at all). The best defense against these critters is to apply a systemic insecticide via soil drench every spring. Products containing dinotefuran and imdacloprid are most commonly used and will be taken up into the tree providing protection against invaders. In the above video I am using Bonide annual tree and shrub insect control. I have been using it since I planted the tree 4 years ago and I have no sign of CMBS. However, my neighbor directly across the street and many others in my development have crepe myrtle trees that have been attacked and are suffering damage. An additional measure to protect and also cure your Crepe myrtle of this pest is to spray a horticultural oil over the winter to suffocate any eggs laid by the insect. And finally, spraying a mix of horticultural oil and bifenthrin in May and then again in late summer will help to eradicate any newly hatched pests. Last summer, the setting sun was casting the most beautiful light on my crêpe myrtle tree, and it absolutely took my breath away. One of the best landscaping decisions I made was to flank both corners of my home with a stunning purpleish pink crêpe myrtle. Here are four reasons you should plant one too: 1. Crêpe myrtles have the most beautiful blooms. And if deadheaded correctly, you can force two or three blooms over the course of a season. (Stay tuned for a video on that coming soon.) 2. Crêpe myrtles are extremely low maintenance. They are drought tolerant, and disease resistant. 3. The attractive bark add visual appeal to your landscape, especially in the winter months. 4. Crêpe myrtles are extremely versatile. If left unpruned, they will basically get as big as you want them to. You can keep them as a smaller shrub if prune correctly. Mornings have started to look a little different around here. Coffee in hand, checking in on the garden while my son plays nearby. Our crepe myrtle is finally blooming, and the drift roses are coming in beautifully. The Eagleston holly is pushing out fresh growth, and I’m pretty certain the fertilizer gave it the boost it needed. Even the salvia I planted last year has nearly tripled in size. We’re spending the long weekend close to home, with family. Slowing down, and appreciating the little shifts that make it feel like summer’s almost here. Hope your weekend’s off to a beautiful start. If you happen to have a crepe myrtle too close to a building or structure or power line, try a method called "pollarding" which creates a smaller silhouette without causing as much damage to the tree. #crepemyrtle #crapemyrtle
