The main reason is that most cameras’ automatic metering systems will try to make the exposure of the entire scene “correct.” If the light source is behind your subject, the camera will see a lot of bright light and try to compensate by underexposing your subject. This can result in a photo where your subject is dark and shadowy, with the background blown out. For that reason, it is essential to use manual settings when photographing towards sunlight.
There are many techniques that you can use and get great results. One technique is to use a fill flash or strobe. This will help to brighten up your subject and reduce the shadows. You can also use a reflector, however, it won’t be as powerful in an open area compared to a flash or strobe.
Consider using a lens hood to block stray light from entering the lens; this will help to reduce lens flare and improve the contrast and colors in your photos. Position the lens hood so that it shades the front of the lens from direct sunlight. You can use your subject to block some direct sunlight as well. Knowing that, take advantage of natural lens flares, a wonderful opportunity to get creative and deliver dreamy results!
