DAIt was an honour to begin Dastkari Haat Crafts Bazaar, Chennai, with the presence of eminent classical dancer and guru Ms. Leela Samson, who formally inaugurated the bazaar today.
In her interaction, Ms. Leela Samson reflected on the importance of preserving handmade traditions, supporting artisan communities, and keeping cultural knowledge alive through practice, patronage, and dialogue. Her words beautifully echoed the spirit of Dastkari Haat, a space where craft is not just displayed, but respected, shared, and sustained.
A thoughtful start to a week filled with stories shaped by hand, heritage carried forward, and conversations that matter.

Held on the occasion of International Women’s Day, the gathering brought together leading voices from India’s craft traditions—Leela Bordia (Blue Pottery), Japani Shyam (Gond Art) and Shanti Devi (Madhubani Painting)—for an insightful fireside conversation moderated by Dr. Alka Pande.
As the evening unfolded, moments of laughter, reflection and togetherness filled the space. Guests spent time engaging with the artisans and experiencing their work up close, while a soulful song by one of the artisans added a heartfelt note to the gathering. The evening concluded with guests penning their thoughts and pledges of support for women artisans on the pledge wall, followed by refreshments from @sage_farm_cafe, bringing the celebration to a warm and meaningful close.
