After reading through the white paper today I think many of us are feeling quite broken. Once again we must fight to give our children an education and for so many of you that have fought years for an EHCP, you are now facing the possibility of it being removed. EhCPs will remain for the ones with the highest needs but who are those children and who will get to decide this? There is no scale from mild to severe = thats not how it works! Yes, mainstreams need to be better but let's be honest here = mainstream will never suit many children. We need smaller class sizes, sensory rooms, lifts and hoists, teachers for deaf students, speech and language therapists, black out rooms, safety equipment, nappy changing facilities....the list goes on and on and a SEND provision (a room) in a mainstream school is not going to cover this. Where are more SEND schools that us parents have been asking over and over for? This just isn't good enough and the knock on effect to this will be more pupils with EBSA, more teachers leaving and more parents forced to home educate. These of course, are my thoughts on the situation. How is everyone else feeling? #whitepaper #seneducation #EHCP #sensupport #dfe

The new government white paper on SEND is full of ideas. Some of them could genuinely improve how children with additional needs are supported in school. The shift from EHCPs to ISPs will only work if we get one thing right first. Training. Because here is the reality. Teachers cannot hold 30 individual instruction manuals in their heads. • Pupil A needs movement before learning • Pupil B needs the opposite • Pupil C needs reduced language • Pupil D needs more structure • And so on That is not sustainable. And it sets everyone up to feel like they are getting it wrong. What if instead of expecting teachers to memorise every difference, we designed the whole school environment to be neurodiverse friendly? What if staff understood the psychology behind behaviour? When adults understand the “why” behind behaviour, they can: • spot challenges early • respond proactively • reduce escalation • build connection Around 1 in 20 children in the UK show ADHD-related traits, yet only about 1.6 percent have a formal diagnosis . That means many children in every classroom may be struggling without recognised support. 1 in 5 children are in need of extra support ! This is not about adding more paperwork. It is about giving schools practical, psychology-based training and psychoeducation so that support becomes embedded, not bolted on. I am currently developing a programme for schools built on this exact principle. Because when the environment changes, every child benefits. SIGH!!! Yes, we need more teachers BUT retention needs to be overhauled before the government starts spending money on training and recruiting new ones. Because the reality is that of all the people we spend money training, very few actually stay in the role long term. As usual, the government is chasing quick wins and easy stats to make it look like they’re doing a good job. But they aren’t. They’re wasting money on a show before doing the groundwork needed to actually improve the situation. I was a trainee teacher, and of those I trained with, most are no longer teachers. Many of those who are have gone to work abroad. There are so many problems with the system that I couldn’t possibly address them all here, but this huge recruitment drive highlights some major issues. MONEY… this is a big one, with many angles. Yes, recruitment and training costs are huge, but I want to focus on something else. Schools have no money. They’re cutting costs left, right and centre — and do you know what’s being lost? Skills and expertise. I have seen countless examples of excellent teachers — with proven results, years of experience, and incredible rapport with students — being “let go” or “managed out.” What happens to their role? It goes to an NQT. One recent example I saw would have saved the school around £15k a year. But that outstanding teacher was lost from the system entirely. And they won’t return to a system that treated them as collateral damage, that took their passion and reduced it to a budgeting exercise. The replacement NQT may be a decent teacher — but they don’t have 20 years of SEND experience, CPD, exam knowledge, marking expertise, or curriculum depth. They don’t have 20 years of knowing which books ignite curiosity, which experiments light up a classroom, or how to truly bring a subject like science to life. So is that really a win for the school? Is it a win for the children? No. Absolutely not. But it saved money. CONTINUED IN COMMENTS...
