TW: depersonalization & derealization. This is what DPDR used to feel like for me. On the outside, I probably looked a bit disoriented… maybe anxious… but mostly “normal.” On the inside, everything felt wrong. Supermarkets were one of the hardest places. The lights felt too bright and artificial. Sounds felt sharper. My vision felt flat, fuzzy, almost greyed out, like I was watching the world through a screen. It felt like I wasn’t fully in my body. Like I was there, but not really there. Sometimes I’d question whether I was even real, or whether this was how things would feel forever. I lived like this constantly for more than 10 years. Not on and off. Not just during panic attacks. All the time. What made it worse was the fear of the feeling itself. I was terrified of DPDR, terrified of making it stronger, terrified that pushing myself would make it stay permanently. So I avoided. Places. Situations. Change. But the feeling stayed anyway. What I eventually learned is that DPDR, as distressing as it is, is not dangerous. It’s a nervous system response, often linked to anxiety, not a sign that you’re broken or losing your mind. And the way out wasn’t trying to get rid of the feeling. It was learning to live alongside it. Doing things while feeling unreal. Going to the shop anyway. Letting the sensations be there without checking, analysing, or fighting them. That’s how the moments of relief started. Seconds at first. Then minutes. Then longer stretches where I forgot to monitor how I felt. Over time, those moments became the norm. If you’re dealing with DPDR right now, please know this: You’re not alone. You’re not broken. And you don’t have to figure this out by yourself. I’ve opened a free DPDR support group chat inside my community where people can share experiences, ask questions, and talk openly with others who genuinely understand, including me. 💬 Comment “dpdr group”and I’ll invite you in. I know how isolating this can feel. I’m happy to talk.

What is DPDR and what to do👇 Depersonalization/Derealization can make everything feel like a dream or like watching your life from the outside. It’s one of the scariest symptoms of anxiety because you might feel like you are not yourself and losing the control. I had this for years and here are my 5 Quick Tips to Calm DPDR: 1️⃣ Press your feet into the ground and feel the floor. 2️⃣ Focus on a sound, or smell - get aware. 3️⃣ Breathe quietly: Inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 6. 4️⃣ Clench your fists under the table, then release. 5️⃣ Silently remind yourself: “This is temporary. I am safe.” Follow @panic.to.peace for daily tips about nervous system regulation and anxiety recovery. #DPDR #Derealization #Depersonalization #AnxietyHelp #nervoussystemregulation #nervoussystemhealing

PDA kiddos can have high support needs, needing to have their water cup lifted for them, their head held up while using the restroom, a coregulator sitting next to them solely focused on them who is handling any tasks that arise, explaining things so they feel predictable, and looking for opportunities to minimize the energy a PDAer is expending on menial tasks. They will tell you quickly if they don’t want you doing those things for them. The fact that PDA kiddos won’t communicate these needs to other caregivers and don’t “look” like they need this level of support is why it’s such a struggle to help our kids feel safe with other people- how can they feel safe if none of their support needs can get met without them feeling in the one down? This goes for adults oftentimes too. Adult PDAers may indicate a need for help without directly asking, such as saying “I’m really struggling to cook” for example. This is them testing the water to see if you will offer help, as they may not want to put you in a position of feeling obligated, or be able to put themself in a vulnerable position to ask. And if the PDAer picks up that they ARE burdening people (ie people making jokes about how much work they are, how easy the tasks they need help with are, how busy that person is, or if there is any deep sighing or other cues of resistance, their mask may go up and they may begin to assure you they actually don’t need help after all). #pdaautism #pdaautistic #pathologicaldemandavoidance #supportneedsfamily #neurodiversityaffirmingtherapist

The country has a massive Direct Support Professional shortage right now. And it’s not new, it’s been building for years. DSPs show up every day to help individuals with disabilities live fuller, more independent lives. It’s meaningful work, and there’s never been a greater need for people willing to do it. Better Together Supports is hiring. If you’re looking for a career where you actually make a difference, this is it. No two days look the same, the work matters, and you’ll be part of a team that genuinely cares.

Dependent Personality Disorder (DPD) is a mental health condition characterized by an intense need to be cared for, leading to submissive and clinging behaviors. Neurologically, this can be linked to a heightened fear of abandonment, often appearing as hyperreactivity in the brain's emotional and threat-response centers. #DependentPersonalityDisorder #DPD #MentalHealth #PsychologyFacts #Neuroscience #AttachmentTheory #Anxiety #AbandonmentIssues #MentalHealthAwareness #BrainScience #CopingMechanisms

Research shows what PDAers have been saying- PDA is related to Autism and Anxiety. This is why it’s important to prioritize safety and lowering anxiety above compliance. Anything else will simply exacerbate struggles by increasing anxiety. We lower anxiety in PDAers by: giving autonomy, coregulating, taking away demands, modeling regulation skills, increasing predictability, focusing on connection. Safety over compliance, always 🩵 (Note, research is way behind what the PDA community knows about PDA, if you prioritize research, you’re already behind).
