Last little clip from my recital, one of my favorite parts of this concerto. Shostakovich’s music is always marked by the blatantly obvious and the hidden message. This concerto has a lot of that repressed nature but this cadenza is where he unleashes everything outright. Considering he uses the (later famous) DSCH motif, it feels like he’s screaming from the heart of his identity. Today marks 50 years since the passing of Shostakovich (1906-1975). If much of his orchestral works were devoted to the USSR’s politics and history, his piano works sprang from his personal life: for example, his Sonata No. 2 in B minor, Op. 61 (1943 ) is a eulogy dedicated to his teacher Leonid Nikolayev (1878-1942). At the 2023 Rubinstein Competition, 2nd Prize & Audience Prize winner Giorgi Gigashvili (@gigassh) played that Sonata: his spirited playing fits this 3rd mov made of 9 variations. Written during WW2, in between the Leningrad Symphony Op. 60 (the material of the 1st mov is in fact present in this Sonata’s 1st mov) and the Stalingrad Symphony Op. 65, the atmosphere of that sonata is anything but military… It is introspective and desolate, with a special place for pauses, silence and space, as though a Greek threnody: « utmost mastery, novelty, intellect – empty for the soul and severe – clever and ancient – ancient sorrow consumes and oppresses. But like everything Shostakovich writes, it is unique of its kind and incomparable. » wrote Heinrich Neuhaus in a 1944. Since it was written in memory of his teacher Nikolayev who was also a composer, it is probable that Shostakovich – who was fond of cryptograms, quotations and nods – used Nikolayev’s works for this Sonata. Particularly in this 3rd mov, he mirrors the harmonic progression of his professor’s Suite in B minor and the structure of his String Quartet No. 1 in A Major where there is an unaccompanied theme of 33 bars and 7 variations; Shostakovich followed suit in the 2nd mov of his String Quartet No. 1, Op. 49 and then in the finale of this Sonata where a 30-bar unaccompanied theme precedes a variegation of variations (the most virtuosic at 1:07, theme in the left-hand, no rest).
