One step closer to my half marathon in a few months. . With every run, you live and you learn. Above all else, you come away inspired. So many folks from all age groups, abilities and walks of life run the same course as you. So so incredible to see and share that space. . Finished close to my previous time although my training showed I was getting better. However I kept working those legs up until the last day, periods and not enough sleep plus the cold windy weather played a role. In hindsight, I should have rested my feet (which I'm doing today) and slept earlier. All notes taken for the next big run. . Rediscovering my joy of running after a decade is showing me how much has changed physically and how much more I have to tap in mentally to keep going especially the last few kms felt brutal. Legs were lead at that point. I walked some of the uphills to conserve energy. Taking my first energy gel ever in my whole life meant I didn't know how it would react with my gut or bowels. So again, should have tried that before the 10k really. I could feel a stitch coming so again, took it slow. . Any tips and suggestions from the seasoned running folk here, I'm all ears. . Let’s retire these narratives ⬇️ 1. “I have to choose between my work, my passion and my kids.” Naaa, I don’t believe in choosing. I want everything, hahaha! Not easy at all and the juggle is real. That said, I do have the privilege of support and flexibility that allow me to give my best on any given day. 2. “Mums should bounce back quickly.” The pressure on this one. It was definitely there the first time and by the second, I knew better. My body didn’t disappear, it made and carried life. I understood that strength, health, and confidence matter more than the shape of my body. 3. “Self-care is selfish when you have kids.” It isn't selfish, it is for sanity. Whether that the gym, a walk or time with the family. Happy mums, happy home! 4. “Fitness has to be all or nothing.” Movement doesn’t need extremes. We all have busy lives and a million things. Small, consistent effort counts and adds up. That's why #DailyMovementClub started. 5. “You should feel guilty for wanting more.” Wanting growth, joy, and fulfilment doesn’t make me ungrateful. It makes me want to live this life fully. . If any of this resonated with you, you are not alone. Take this is your reminder. You’re not behind, a failure or asking for too much. Progress is still progress even if you don't see it. It isn't linear one bit but showing up will always count for something. . A gentle reminder as folks start making new year resolutions especially movement and fitness related. So as you begin or carry on your journey, worth noting: 1) Progress can be subtle and slow. Especially real body recomp rarely looks dramatic month to month. Be patient. I find this hard which is why I made a video diary. 2) The scale may stay the same, but strength, energy and body shape can still improve. I went up and down a few times and now with all the festive food the past few months, I'm back to where I was but it feels different. Muscle mass is definitely higher because the numbers are on the up at the gym. 3) Eating well without restriction fuels training, recovery and real life. And it feels so damn good! It is a privilege to eat and I'm grateful for it. 4) The year works in seasons and so do our food habits. Summer, for me, is all fresh and light stuff while winter is for wholesome, warm and comforting meals. Perfect if you are looking for fat loss and muscle build. 5) Track more than the number on the scale. Take photos, check your sleep quality, energy and how you feel. All these matter, especially with motherhood, work and life stress and daily rigamarole. . All this to show that consistency over time is the real win. You do your best every day and that's great too. P.S. Having a supportive partner/folks at home is a massive plus in this journey. .
