I’m an 80s kid but I remember this cartoon very well, a classic Cosgrove Hall production written by Brian Trueman (the legend who would later bring us the likes of Danger Mouse and Count Duckula) the show ran from 1977-1980 and was a childhood smash! It even hit #1 in the UK before the album was fully out, mostly off downloads, which was kind of a big deal at the time. The song just sounded different from everything else on the radio. It wasn’t straight pop, not pure hip-hop, not traditional soul, it was its own thing. The production from Danger Mouse is so minimal but powerful. That cinematic string sample gives it this dramatic feel, and then CeeLo Green’s voice comes in and completely takes over. His vocals are emotional but controlled, that hook is impossible not to sing along to. What’s crazy is how introspective the lyrics are for such a mainstream hit.
