It’s really hard and emotionally draining to engage in conversation with someone who is deflecting. Here are some things you can do:
1. Bring the focus back around to you with “I” statements.
2. Give them time to reflect. Sometimes they will come around, and sometimes they won’t unfortunately. This can be really painful to accept. You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot force it to drink.

PODeflection is closely tied to emotional intelligence (EI) because it reflects how well someone understands, manages, and takes responsibility for their emotions.
When emotional intelligence is low, deflection is often used as a defense mechanism. A person may feel uncomfortable, threatened, embarrassed, or emotionally overwhelmed, so instead of acknowledging those feelings, they redirect the conversation, blame someone else, or avoid the issue altogether. This happens because they lack awareness of their emotions or don’t yet have the skills to handle them calmly.
With high emotional intelligence, deflection becomes less necessary. Emotionally intelligent people can recognize what they’re feeling, tolerate discomfort, and respond thoughtfully rather than reactively. They are more likely to say, “I feel defensive right now,” or “I need a moment to think about this,” instead of changing the subject or shifting blame.
In short, deflection often signals an avoidance of emotional responsibility, while emotional intelligence is about facing emotions with awareness, honesty, and control. The more emotionally intelligent a person is, the less they rely on deflection to protect themselves.
