She used to paint the windows to create privacy, and ever since I was a child, I’ve done the same 🤍
In Norway we use kefir.
In Denmark I use buttermilk.
But honestly… you can use almost any cultured milk.
It doesn’t smell, it doesn’t mold, and it comes off with warm water❄️
There’s something magical about watching the winter landscape appear on the glass…
and it makes me happy every single Christmas 🤍

EMI first noticed this cultural difference on playgrounds — kids here don’t play as though they are fighting bad guys. At library story hours, the tales are closer to Hans Christian Andersen’s — stories where even those who do wrong are shaped by life, not born evil, and where compassion often matters more than conquest. Of course, plenty of people in Denmark sometimes do bad things. But in Denmark, the idea of labeling someone a “bad guy” to hunt and take down just doesn’t really exist.
And science shows how good this mindset is: because when we label people as “evil,” we fuel fear, division, and violence. Especially because “bad” is never fixed — it shifts with culture, politics, and power (APA, 2022; Stanford Center on Poverty & Inequality, 2021).
In Denmark, policies and culture reflect this:
✨ Dialogue policing — officers de-escalate protests through conversation, not force.
📚 Cooperation in schools — grades come later, protecting children’s self-worth.
⚖️ Alternative sentencing — treatment, education, or service instead of jail.
🏡 Humane prisons — inmates work and study to return as good neighbors.
🩺 Universal safety nets — healthcare, childcare, housing reduce the roots of crime.
The outcomes are striking: Denmark’s homicide rate is among the lowest in the world (0.7 per 100,000 vs. 6.3 in the U.S.), reoffending rates are among Europe’s lowest, and trust levels are twice as high as in America.
Denmark shows a really key lesson: safety doesn’t come from taking down “bad guys.” It comes from helping people, not labeling them as beyond repair ❤️🩹

Anyhow, this grouping is an incredible testament to Denmark’s intentional, science-backed approach to early childhood: bornehave groups kids at the peak years of one of only two major synaptic growth spurts in human life (the other occurs in adolescence). During this period, the brain forms up to a million new neural connections per second — roughly twice the density of an adult brain — wiring itself through movement, play, and social interaction. Neuroscience shows that before about age six, the prefrontal cortex—which supports focus, planning, and self-regulation—is still developing, making play the most effective form of learning.
That’s why Denmark separates børnehave completely from school. It’s not preschool: there’s no formal teaching, no academic preparation, and no relation to school readiness. Instead, under the Dagtilbudsloven (the national Daycare Act), children spend their days outdoors, exploring nature, cooperating, and learning through real life. The Læreplan sets six holistic learning themes—community, nature, creativity, communication, body and movement, and culture—all delivered through play. Mixed-age groups build empathy and leadership, and as mentioned before, families can even extend a year before school if a child isn’t ready.
