Here are some dermatologist tips to consider when caring for a newborn! ➡️Newborn skin is extremely fragile in the first few weeks, especially while the umbilical cord stump is still there. Consider a light sponge bath instead of submerging baby’s body in water. ➡️Choose a diaper cream with zinc oxide. This works to protect baby’s skin from breaking down and soothes irritation by forming a protective barrier between the skin and urine/poo. ➡️It’s ok to begin moisturizing right away and this can help keep eczema at bay, especially if you have a strong family history. Choose a bland, fragrance free cream or ointment and apply after bathing. ➡️Keep nails trimmed to avoid baby accidentally scratching or breaking open skin. ➡️If you’re blasting heat in your house or baby is eczema prone, consider using a cold air humidifier in baby’s room to moisten the air and keep skin hydrated. ➡️Avoid placing baby in direct sunlight for long periods of time. Baby skin is very prone to sunburn and this can happen rather quickly. If headed to the beach, it’s best to keep baby in sun protective clothing and in the shade. ➡️Everyone loves baby kisses but herpes (cold sores) can be easily spread this way and in some babies, this can lead to major hospitalization, so ask relatives and friends to kiss baby on body clothing instead. ➡️The newborn phase can be tough because baby’s bowels are active from milk. Try your best to change diapers frequently to avoid skin breakdown and irritation. Use wipes that are free of fragrance or rinse bottom under the faucet and dry well. ➡️If you’re having a tough time managing baby’s skin, check in with your pediatrician.
