BMDevils Tower rises straight out of the Wyoming plains, standing eerily solitary amidst miles of wilderness and ranch land, a hulking monolith that feels like something more than a natural geopolitical feature.
To the Lakota, it’s named Bear Lodge. When a group of young girls were running to escape an enormous bear, they prayed to the Great Spirit, who raised the ground they were standing on to the sky. The grooves on the sides of the tower were from the bear’s claws as he tried to climb, but kept sliding down.
When Colonel Dodge explored the area in 1875, it seems like his expedition marked the landmark as Devils Tower, following a mistranslation from their guide as “Bad Gods Tower.”
There are some who look at the tower and see the stump of a great tree, like Yggdrasil, the world tree from Norse myth.
Others report a strange humming sound coming from inside the tower, and strange lights hovering near its roof

ZIIt is site that had lent itself to myths and legends for centuries. Long before Steven Speilberg made Devils Tower the alien landing pad in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Lakota legend held that the fluted sides of Devils Tower were caused by a mighty bear raking the rock with his claws in an attempt to reach nine maidens who clambered onto a rock, praying to the Great Spirit to save them. He raised the rock straight up out of the ground as a column, allowing the maidens to ascend into the sky and become what we call the Pleiades constellation.
There’s no mistaking it: rising 1,267 feet out of the plains leading to the Black Hills like the stump of some titanic petrified tree. It is Devils Tower.
(A typo in the Act of Congress establishing it as America’s first National Monument back in 1906 accidentally left out the apostraphe, so it is not, in fact, spelled “Devil’s Tower”).
