The Anti-Ableism Series Part 362 Featuring @repherbconaway Disability rights are your movement too. Solidarity starts by joining those already doing the work. Video description/transcript: Tiffany and Congressman Conaway in the frame in the Capitol. Tiffany: "Do you want to be a better ally to disabled people?" Rep Conaway: "Yes, cause you always want to do better. When I served in the New Jersey legislature, I was part of the Disability Caucus. My name is Herb Conaway. I am a Congressman representing the great state of New Jersey and the 3rd Congressional District. People should take time to learn what's going on in their communities because there are people with challenges who live with us and among us. All you have to do is take time to look and to understand what's going on with them. I mean as they say, look for the heart beating behind the breast. If you come to understand that, know where people are, it will cause you to recognize injustice when it's there and to work toward making things better for everybody. You want that for yourself. We should make sure we want those same things that we strive for for everybody in our community. Have entree in to those who are ahead of you in the process, organizing themselves around disability rights and join them in their cause. Because their cause is your cause too." #AntiAbleism #AntiAbleist #DisabilityRights #DisabilityInclusion

Australian volunteer Danielle Vellucci is an early childhood interventionist based in Naarm/Melbourne who wanted to extend her impact beyond home - supporting children and families through speech therapy where it’s needed most. Through the Australian Volunteers Program, Danielle partnered with the National Pediatric Hospital in Cambodia, helping establish a speech therapy clinic and working alongside local colleagues to strengthen early intervention services. Press play and discover how sharing skills, building trust and working locally has contributed to meaningful, lasting impact. #AusVols #InternationalVolunteering #locallyledchange #SpeechTherapy #DisabilityInclusion #Cambodia

Employment matters. Inclusion matters. Joined-up government matters. Today in the Dáil, I raised the need for a whole-of-government approach to employment for people with disabilities — because this cannot be done in silos. In my own constituency, Scoil Eoin, a school for children with moderate intellectual disabilities, has a 95% post-leaving employment rate. That shows what’s possible when education, preparation and employment pathways are aligned. I also highlighted the Oireachtas Work and Learning (OWL) Programme, developed with WALK in Walkinstown, which shows how supported employment works when organisations and employers lead by example. Work gives people dignity, purpose and independence. Everyone deserves the chance to participate fully in working life — and when government, schools and employers work together, the outcomes speak for themselves. #DisabilityInclusion #Employment #WholeOfGovernment #OWLProgramme #InclusiveWorkplaces DublinSouthCentral OpportunityForAll

Tiffany: "Do you want to be a better ally to disabled people?" Kaylee: "Absolutely. Hi, I'm Kaylee Bays. And on social media, I am @SlayleeBays. Overall being open to listening. More times than not, people assume what we are capable of. And they assume that we are not dancers, that we are not artists, that we are not employees, that we don't have things and dreams and aspirations that we claim and expand to make work for us. I'm a dancer just as you. I'm an employee just as you. I'm a human just as you. I just have to expand my dreams to make them work for me." #AntiAbleism #Disability #DisabilityInclusion #DisabilityPride

No one else looks like her on this track. Khara, my blind daughter, just ran another track meet—this time stepping into her first high school season. For the fourth season in a row, she’s still the only blind runner on the track. That hasn’t changed from middle school to high school. New team, new level… same reality. And if I’m honest, people still don’t always know what to do with her being there. Some stare. Some comment. But then there are the ones who cheer her name. And that part is growing. Being the only one hasn’t been easy. There have been moments where she wasn’t fully seen as part of the team. But Khara doesn’t wait to be understood—she shows up anyway. This meet, she was nervous about her time and how compared to the other runners. Until she realized she hit a personal record. She didn’t win the race. But she ran faster than the last meet…and she didn’t quit. She ran the 100, the 200, and a relay with her teammates. She gave everything she had. She’s not running to prove blindness doesn’t exist. She’s running to show it doesn’t define what she’s allowed to do. She’s often the first. The only. The one people remember. And whether the world is ready or not— she’s stepping into spaces that weren’t built with her in mind and making room anyway. #blindathlete #blindnessawareness #blindkidscan #inclusionmatters #disabilityinclusion Video ID: A series of video clips of Khara, a girl who is blind, holding a tether and running in track meets with a guide runner. Spectators stand on the sidelines watching and cheering her on. Text on each frame: My blind daughter is running track For four seasons, she’s been the only blind runner on the track. It’s not easy always being the only blind runner. But Khara shows up anyway. From middle school…to now stepping onto a high school team… still the only one. But she finishes every race. She keeps getting better. Khara doesn’t focus on the comments about her being blind She listens for the people cheering her name. And she runs toward that. She is blind and she belongs in every sport she chooses. “The miracle is not that I finished… the miracle is that I had the courage to start.”

Why I can’t celebrate International Day of People with Disabilities this year 😣 Normally I’d be all for a big celebration, but lately… being disabled has felt a bit like competing in a reality show called “How Many Barriers Can We Fit Into One Week?” Broken ramps on buses 🚌 Wheelchair spaces doubling as luggage storage 🧳 Airlines treating my wheelchair like a joke ✈️ And the classic: people assuming my voice is optional 🧐 A strong season, truly. I’m still trying to show up, though! We all are. And that’s something worth talking about. This year’s theme is all about creating disability-inclusive societies, and honestly, that’s the part that gives me hope. Despite the bumps (or missing ramps…), there are people, places and communities pushing things forward 1 we just need more support on this front. Inclusion isn’t about perfection — it’s about progress. It’s about access info that actually exists, travel that doesn’t make us sweat, and a society that listens to disabled people the first time. So today isn’t about pretending everything is rosy. It’s about recognising the strength of our community, the changes we’re fighting for, and the fact that disabled people are, and always have been part of the world’s progress. I want to know how YOU are feeling recently as I know there are lots of you out there who are struggling. Let me know how you feel in the comments. Let’s chat!! Love you all ❤️ #IDPWD #IDPWD2024 #WheelieGoodLife #DisabilityInclusion #ProgressNotPerfection #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs #DisabilityCommunity

This video is 28 seconds long and highlights the serious message that “𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐣𝐨𝐤𝐞” by showcasing the immense difficulty a person in a wheelchair faces when trying to navigate a poorly designed ramp. The footage shows a man repeatedly attempting to climb a steep, metal ramp with inadequate handrails, only to slide back down each time, illustrating how thoughtless infrastructure can physically limit someone’s independence. This impactful content was created by Virexahub, serving as a powerful reminder of the importance of proper accessibility for everyone. One year ago, Mark Carney eliminated the Minister of Disability position in government, ensuring Canadians living with disabilities would lose their voice and be left behind. That decision was wrong and hurts people. I’m headed to Winnipeg for the NDP Convention and will be addressing the Disability Committee on how a strong NDP presence in Parliament is needed to ensure that a dedicated Minister of Disability becomes a reality again, so that the Canada Disability Benefit Act can grow. I fought hard to launch this new benefit, and only the NDP will fight for it. #canpoli #cdnpoli #DisabilityRights #DisabilityJustice #DisabilityAdvocacy

Can we be honest about small talk for a second? For many people, especially neurodivergent professionals, surface-level chatter isn’t energizing. It’s draining. When every interaction starts with scripts and safe questions, real connection gets buried under performance. What if we skipped the fluff and led with something thoughtful instead? Networking was never supposed to be about surviving conversations. It’s about building meaningful ones. What’s one question you wish people asked instead of “So, what do you do?” #Neurodiversity #InclusiveNetworking #AuthenticConnection #DisabilityInclusion #Leadership
