Asking—begging even—for help… and then being told “it’s too much” or “we can’t do anything” can be so soul-crushing. In Ep 195 of The Rare Life, Ali @aliblair_ shares her story of navigating this constant refrain, plus so many other aspects of disability parenting including: - the exhaustion of constant advocating -the misunderstanding that comes with invisible disabilities -the grief of not being able to stop her daughter’s pain -and the frustration from the lack of adequate support for her family. Get this vulnerable and deeply relatable episode anywhere you find podcasts! And tell us—have you felt this disappointment when you’ve reached out for support only to be met with no help in return?

The greatest lesson I’ve had to learn in disability parenting is that it’s okay to feel all of the emotions. None of them are wrong. They all serve a purpose. And I’ll tell you, it’s okay to be angry. Of course we can’t let it control us but it’s okay to lean in and feel it once in a while. I’m angry that my son is so vulnerable. I’m angry that he’s so susceptible to abuse. I’m angry that his life is so hard. I’m angry the one day I will die and leave him on this earth without me. And everyone or those feelings are justified and real. #leanin #motherhood #parenting

Life with Caleb has been an extraordinary adventure, filled with moments that have reshaped our understanding of joy and deepened our connection to God's love. He opens our eyes to the simple yet profound joys of life. His infectious laughter teaches us that happiness isn’t about seeking perfection but embracing each moment with open hearts. His curiosity and love for life remind me to cherish the small wonders, to see the world through a lens of gratitude. Through him, I’ve learned that joy is more than an emotion, it’s the sweetest response to the world around us, nurtured by love, patience, and grace. Caleb is so much more than his diagnosis, he’s a light, illuminating my life with so much fun and love I didn’t know existed. He demonstrates God's magnificent design, showing us that His plans are not just good, but filled with extraordinary surprises. He’s not just my sweet boy, he’s a guide, drawing me closer to the heart of God. In our journey, joy has revealed itself in powerful ways. I’ve found it in the quiet moments, the inchstones, and the everyday miracles that once went unnoticed. My experience as his mom has transformed my heart, redefined my faith, and shown me that life's greatest blessings often arrive in unexpected forms. 💙💛 - #specialneedsfamily #specialneedsmom #downsyndromelove #faithjourney #DisabilityJourney #risenmotherhood #motherhoodunplugged #downsyndrome #faithinspired #reelsinstagram #disabilityawareness #disabilityparenting Special Needs, Disability Parenting, Down Syndrome, Christian Motherhood

What looks like a simple jump into a foam pit… is actually a moment of magic made possible by love, persistence, and a whole lot of adapting. ⁣ Disability parenting means constantly reimagining the world to include our kids. From inaccessible spaces to unexpected challenges, we find a way. We always find a way. 💖 ⁣ Because when you’re raising a child with a disability, “we can’t” becomes “we will” just differently. ⁣ I’ll climb, lift, carry, support, and adapt however I need to. Not because it’s easy but, because her joy is worth everything. ⁣ We don’t wait for the world to become accessible. We create the joy anyway. ✨☺️ ⁣ #GoBriellaGo #inclusionmatters #cerebralpalsykids #disabledandcute #cerebralpalsywarrior #nevergiveup #DisabilityParenting #CerebralPalsyAwareness #MakingMagicHappen #AdaptAndOvercome #CPStrong #skyzone #InclusionMatters #disabilityinclusion #disabilityadvocate #accessibilitymatters #accessibilityforall #accessibledesign

While “Welcome to Holland” was written as a metaphor for parenting a child with Down Syndrome, it definitely makes the rounds for disability parenting. For me, it just doesn’t hit like folk artist Paul Simon. “You Can Call Me Al” is really a deeply poetic case of assumed identity. Paul and his wife at the time showed up at a party and were erroneously introduced as Al and Betty, and they just rolled with it. When you have a child with significant disabilities, you change. Who cares what they call you? You just keep moving. From there, the lyrics of the song, particularly the third verse, are the metaphor I think of when I think of the learning curve associated with caring for a medically complex child. You find yourself in a foreign situation, and there are words you aren’t familiar with. Your pockets are empty and therefore you lack power. At first, things seem stark, brutal and jarring. There’s a rawness to your situation and a focus on survival. But as you continue, your senses awaken and you begin to find beauty and meaning in your surroundings, finally submitting and choosing to celebrate that in struggle, there can be joy. And then a third perspective that resonates with me is the music video for the song, featuring Chevy Chase. Here, a lumbering jester shares the soulful words and story of a silent companion. He’s the vehicle and the outlet, but the thoughts are the direct genesis of the one sitting next to him. That’s just our take. Hopefully you find something that speaks to you and helps illustrate your journey. Sincerely, Betty (and Al) #flashbackfriday

Getting comfortable with the uncomfortable. Having nursing in the home or even extra family around to help care for a loved one is ALOT. It’s another complicated aspect of disability parenting/parenting a child with significant medical needs. It can be amazing when you find the right person but also extremely stressful when things don’t work out. As things continue to get complicated, I feel like we are heading in this direction. We’ve been there before, and our nurse was incredible, but I don’t want to go back 😭. I had coffee with a friend the other day and she gave me a gentle reminder that if you want to survive, you will need help. 🫶🏼 #disabilityparenting #caregiver #medicalmom #survivalmode #barelysurviving #nursing #homehealthnurse #momtok

Mamas: Don’t get buried in the stress and overwhelm. You’ll miss the magical moments. Dont get lost in the “not yet”. You’ll miss the milestones reached or progress made. Don’t buy into the idea that a diagnosis always means suffering. You’ll miss the beauty and humanity that a disability story can include. Disability parenting is hard. And it can also be beautiful. ❤️hugs! #romanticizeyourlife #autismfamily #autismmom #autism #highsupportneeds #nonspeakingautism #lifeishard #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #dance #keepdancing
