DIDisabled joy is resistance. I know at least for me, finding or creating pockets of joy while still staying informed and contributing to the fight where I can, feels completely counterintuitive. Why should I have joy when others are facing the most fearful times of their life right now? But they want us to lose our joy, it makes us more susceptible and less banded together. so as not normal the situations we’re facing are, it’s okay to find a touch of normalcy to keep you going. If you don’t also take care of you, you can’t show up for others.

I’m so excited to show you a little insight of what a ballet class at @dancingwheels.dw looks like!! They use direct and indirect translations to help with wheelchair users in class so my arms switch from port de bras to what the stand up dancers legs are doing. This technique originated by Mary Verdi-Fletcher is a beautiful way to integrate both disabled and non-disabled dancers together!

CHDisability Misconceptions Vs Reality!
1. Many people think that we need to be using our mobility aids at all times in order to actually need it but this isn't the case. Some people may need different aids for different days or different scenarios and, whilst others may rely on their aids more full time, we don't need our wheelchairs in bed!
2. Lots of people think it's really easy to get support when you are disabled & lots of people claim they have disabilities just to gain benefits but this is far from the truth. It's hard enough to know what support is out there and then when you find support filling out applications & doing admin is a full time job and can be extremely draining both mentally & physically. It takes months or often years to get any support and most of the support we get does not cover the extra costs of being disabled.
3. So many people think Disabled folks are lazy & can't or won't do things for themselves but I have never met a lazy disabled person in my life! Yes we may need extra support but often we go above & beyond expectations to prove ourselves to others, to show we can do things, often at a cost to our own health.
4. Whether it's medical TV shows or health & safety guides at work being disabled is always shown to be the worst case scenario and I'm not going to pretend that being disabled is a picnic, it can be ridiculously hard, but there are so many beautiful moments of disabled joy in my life that I wouldn't change. No my life hasn't turned out exactly how I thought it would, but that doesn't mean that the life I've made isn't a good one.

SHEnding 2023 with some ✨disabled joy✨
When I was younger I had a lot more mobility than I do now. I was able to play video games with my dad and my uncles but as my siblings grew up I lost the strength and mobility to use controllers.
Living in a world where games are often played on a screen I'm unable to play a lot of games with them.
I am so happy that the @Metaquest exists so we are able to play together! I might need to get myself one! 💗

DII immediately turned into a kid when I saw this and had to go through it whilst an old man watched and smiled at me having childlike fun 😅 but as someone who lives in a world that isn’t designed for them, I bloody love finding things that are meant for kids that just work perfectly for me 🥹.
