VEEveryone knows the Cliffs of Moher. Almost nobody outside Ireland knows Slieve League. Sliabh Liag — the mountain of stone pillars — rises six hundred and one metres straight out of the Atlantic Ocean on the southwest coast of County Donegal. They are nearly three times the height of the Cliffs of Moher. Nearly twice the height of the Eiffel Tower. Among the highest sea cliffs in Europe. You stand at the summit on a knife-edge ridge called One Man’s Pass and the ground simply disappears beneath you — six hundred metres of ancient banded quartzite dropping straight into the ocean far below. On calm days you can hear the sea from the top. On rough days you can feel the vibration of the Atlantic through the rock beneath your feet. Early Christian monks built hermitages on this summit — beehive huts and a small chapel that still echo the area’s fifteen hundred years of spiritual history. Pilgrims have been walking to it since the 5th century. Seals and dolphins and basking sharks move through the dark waters far below. The Cliffs of Moher get the tour buses and the gift shops and the queues. Slieve League gets the silence and the wild Atlantic and the feeling that you are standing at the very edge of the world with nothing between you and America.
