Day 4: Sisters proves yet again the influence Alfred Hitchcock had on Brian de Palma’s career. It’s essentially a mix between Psycho + Rear Window + Rope + The Lady Vanishes, as elements from each of those movies are all ever present in De Palma’s seventh feature film. Hell… to place the cherry on top of this psychological/horror sundae, it’s even got a score composed by Bernard Hermann (who composed seven of Hitchcock’s films, including Psycho). I know a lot of people complain about De Palma being a Hitchcock copy, but I don’t think that’s the case whatsoever. He has a very particular style of filmmaking that’s evident in all of his movies (Blow Out, Body Double, Dressed to Kill), where he places the audience in a voyeuristic role, eavesdropping conversations and events unfolding on screen… even to the point where the devil might be in the details. In other words, if you’re not paying attention to the film, you’ll potentially miss out key details that could hold the answer to the mystery. This film is all about how voyeurism, distrust in media, and mental health all contribute and lead to nightmarish scenario for the film’s characters. A solid entry for this month’s batch of movies/soundtracks as horror, in my opinion, is most effective when the outcome is not in everyone’s favor. #raisingcain #ennombredecain #1992 #briandepalma #johnlithgow #lolitadavidovich #stevenbauer #gabriellecarteris #thriller #moviesofthe90s La ciencia (la de los mad doctors que están "pallá", no la que te ayuda a sanar) e indagar en estudios antropológicos sobre las relaciones familiares nunca han hecho demasiadas buenas migas, y menos si es en una película de De Palma donde personas con la cabecita alterada con relaciones sentimentales tóxicas (perdón, más bien radiactivas) son expuestas a pasiones terrenales a través de los celos y el gusanillo posesivo de un monstruo inconscientemente liberado por una esposa que es un poco pindonga y gambitera. Súmale a lo dicho que John Lithgow eleva a un nivel actoral estratosférico a ese tipo de individuos de cables cruzados que ac●jonan solo con fruncir el ceño, y, en este caso, con un paralelismo fundado para que a ratos se te pase por la cabeza que el padre zumbado de su personaje, al que se nombra y que había sido psiquiatra como él, es el hipnotizador de William Finley en 'Sisters' si no fuese porque Cain, Josh y el Doctor Nix, sencillamente, son... bueno, tienen una relación complicada. Y De Palma siendo De Palma, redundando, escarbando en tu cabeza con barridos de cámara y planos en 2D que parecen 3D sin necesidad de usar 3D, porque él sabe cómo darte cosica bastándose de un angulo perfecto, la música melosa discordantemente perfecta de Pino Donaggio y, esto lo repetiré porque con él nunca me caso de repetirlo, el perfeccionismo hecho sobreactuación de mimbres histriónicos y retorcidos -eso no es sonreir, es sentenciarte a buscar plaza en el cementerio- de Lithgow. Por cierto: ¿cómo es posible que algo tan inocuo como una pantalla de televisión en blanco y negro, con un padre acostado junto a su hija cantándole una nana, pueda ser tan bizarro y perturbador? Lo dicho. Es De Palma. El Brian De Palma de 'Sisters' (1972) y 'Dressed to Kill' (1980) asomándose a la década de los 90 para mostrar con un prisma realista lo que M Night Shyamalan trató de contar en "Split" (2016).

He appeared in more than 70 films and TV series, including RoboCop parts 1 and 2 (in which he played the titular character; the Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension; and Star Trek Into Darkness. He also appeared in such films like Mighty Aphrodite, The New Age, and Naked Lunch. I'm TV, he hosted the program Engineering an Empire on the History Channel from 2005 to 2007. He played Christopher Henderson the 5th season of 24, Stan Liddy in 5th season of Showtime original series Dexter, and Charles "Charlie" Barosky in 6th season of FX series Sons of Anarchy. From 2012 to 2017, he was involved in A&E (now Netflix) series Longmire as actor and director. IN 2017, he appeared in The Last Ship as Dr. Paul Vellek. He reprised his role as RoboCop by providing his voice for Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019 and RoboCop: Rogue City in 2023. Today, he turns 78. . . Nancy Allen is an actress. She came to prominence for her performances in several films directed by Brian De Palma (her ex-husband) in 1970s and early 1980s. Her 1st major role was as Chris Hargensen in De Palma's thriller Carrie. She married the director in 1979. She was cast as co-lead in the comedy I Wanna Hold Your Hand, followed by supporting part in 1941. Her portrayal of a prostitute who witnesses a murder in his feature Dressed to Kill which earned her a Golden Globe nomination for New Star of the Year. She then appeared in De Palma's neo-noir film Blow Out with John Travolta. She and De Palma divorced in 1984. She garnered mainstream fame as Anne Lewis in RoboCop, a role she reprised for 2 sequels. Other credits include Poltergeist III, Limit Up, Les Patriotes, and Out of Sight.
